Alfie_ Yeh not good. Maybe you could complain holding them to that email and to resolve it you want free bare roots of the ones they promised you :D

Judging by Facebook, they are facing a total avalanche of similar emails from unhappy customers. They might get round to reading any complaint from me sometime around 2036. By which time I will have figured out how to graft my own standard. ;)

@Nollie - thanks for the photos. What’s the health like on Julia C? Is the scent nice/strong?
  • I signed up to be notified on a lot of DAs stock they seem to only sell bareroot,
    Including
    Jubilee Celebration
    Mary Rose
    Winchester Cathedral
    Falstaff
    Darcey Bussell
    Lady Emma Hamilton
    Graham Thomas

all of which I was notified on the 23rd September they were back in stock. Not sure when they announced but after selling out Lady Emma Hamilton, Darcey Bussell and Winchester Cathedral have been announced as retired. The former we all knew would be happening at some point.
Now watching Jubilee Celebration as it is now sold out but no retirement status yet. Graham Thomas and Mary Rose, Falstaff still not sold out. I think we’ll soon know after these sell out whether retirement is on the cards too.

@owd potter Ebb Tide is still a very small rose for me, it disappears in the border so like Jessica I’m moving it to a pot this year. I don’t get much fragrance either, so it’s interesting others do. Twilight Zone gets better reviews, but I’ve singularly failed to get one in the last two years since it keeps selling out. Cooldoc says it crisps in sun but so does ET for me, purple roses generally do better in morning sun only.

Right, threads probably moved on several pages as I’m typing, will be back later, got a septic tank to service, oh merde!
    Ayup @Nollie
    Thanks for that.
It is a stunning colour and I was certain that it would make a perfect addition to my new border, but it seems to attract polemic reviews, being either robust and prolific or weak & sickly, and I'm now not so sure I fancy a 'punt' on it.
TZ is a good suggestion too, I'll take a new look at some purples, I have a nice East facing spot for a purple upto about 900mm spread.

Just another day at the plant...

Not sure if it helps anyone so late to post but I am just north of Durham if anyone needs an emergency rose collection.  Not sure how it would work out to connect to owner but offer is there if needs be :)

You are so kind, Vic. You are a star

    💫

A very kind offer @Victoria Sponge, thank you.
I'm pleased to say I spoke to the nursery this morning and have purchased two roses. They expect delivery of the second one next week so they'll be dispatched together. I'm happy with the arrangement given the cost of fuel and time, and am really glad I'll (hopefully) have that unique colour of rose in my garden.
All thanks to this thread!  🙂

Glad Trevor White sells Graham Thomas and am looking forward to planting it later this week. https://www.trevorwhiteroses.co.uk/shop/climbing-roses/graham-thomas/

Evelyn is coming today- postal strikes permitting- and I want to give her the best start. She is going to be a pot rose. Is there any sense in adding slow release rose and shrub food to the planting medium now, or should I wait till spring?

ET does have a rep of taking a long time to establish, so it could be we are all being impatient with it or it just does better in a pot. Mine is only 2yrs old and I think it will need another 2. I just can’t see it getting big enough to fill a 90cm spot tho @owd potter although I would be very glad to be proved wrong.

I hope you and JC will be very happy together @Alfie_!  I should have said, mine is a trio but our rose expert Marlorena (taking a forum break at the mo) had a single one bigger than my 3, around 5x5ft I think, so it can grow much larger than stated if given the space. It’s very rain, heat and drought tolerant, a real trooper that I bought on the recommendation of M. Your GT looks good, maybe it prefers a drier climate??

Good question @WhereAreMySecateurs, I debated whether to mix in miracle-gro slow release granules when repotting recently, but figured the new potting medium with added soil and manure would be enough. In theory, it is stimulated by heat so should just sit there until activated next year, but that begs the question why bother to do it now? I don’t really know is what I’m saying 😆
