I really like hostas, but our garden in Norfolk is quite shady. Roses are in the sunnier places, hostas in the shade. Luckily there aren't many slugs. My garden in France is much sunnier, only 1 hosta and I've been planting lots of roses.
Love the dog photos.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
If it makes you feel better @owd potter I bought some from them in March last year and they stayed small and took ages to unchill and grow. Whereas the three I got from PB in November are probably about where my March-planted ones were last June(?).
Thanks @WAMS, it's a soothing balm to my furrowed brow. I had a split planting season with DA roses a couple of years ago, the April planted ones were about 1 month behind the Nov planted ones for new growth but both lots were in flower by end of June. But if only a specific variety will do, then you have to get it while you can or flirt with it being OOS or worse still, retired!!!
@WAMS I must admit that it took me a few secs to get the PB connection to pillow
that rose offer is tempting @owd potter but space is an issue now.. Last year this day I had received my new DA roses.. no signs of new release from them yet..
I'm well stocked up on compost for mulching now. 800L for £40 not too bad! Same price as last yea, it's a different brand so hope it's as good as last year's.
@Imprevu yes thats Scaevola often available as a nice summer annual.
@cooldoc wish I had, save me chiselling the rock hard ground! Both roses do look the same currently but dont when in flower, similar though - catalogue pics below of Lady A and Mrs M.R below. Ive got them adjacent to each other as they seemed a good pair.
I am so upset and jealous of all your lovely dogs that I had to cheer myself up, love that shaggy dog art Nollie. PB and 40% off meant I finally got a standard for a very specific garden spot. It'll mean digging into a rooty area but nothing like the effort required for you strong souls upthread. The other 2 roses just jumped into the basket.
I agree owd potter that you'll get the benefit of your roses so much sooner. I find Feb bare roots are very slow to establish.
I have finally, definitely decided not to reinstate any flowerbeds in the lawn. I lay in bed wondering how many hours total I used to hold a hose on the south facing, full sun, free draining round bed and thought, nah. It's been lawn for 2 decades for a reason.

Peat Free
Expert hairdresser @Nollie I had to look several times at that..
'Sophie's Perpetual'... highly scented ''like a perfume''.. continuous flowering and virtually thornless... can't get much better than that..
