Could somebody kindly give me their opinions on Charles de M and Jacques C old roses. I wanted a few for the summer and my local nursery has a sale on for £6 each at the moment. They have a fair few old rose varieties but these colours I liked best.
Difficult to resist those at the prices.. I always find it so hard when I see these locally..
'Jacques Cartier' is one of the must have old roses as it flowers continuously and is rather beautiful in full flush.. you will notice the terminal leaflet is larger than all the others, somewhat elongated..
'Charles de Mills' only flowers with one flush, and when you plant it I recommend you do so at the same level as you see in the pot, i.e. do not bury the graft, as is the usual practice, but keep it exposed..
p.s. they also look really good specimens - all those thick canes !..
I'll be starting the new thread in the morning everybody, so please look out for that.. Thanks..
@Marlorena - yes I couldn’t believe those prices either. They must have 90 + varieties all at that price. Thousands of them. Took me about half an hour just to look at what they had 😂
@Alfie__ do you mind posting which nursery? (Initials are OK!) If you search the thread for a photo Omori posted of CdMills you might have to get it, too;)
I’ve just been outside to tidy the front garden a bit (cats just love using it as a toilet - it’s infuriating!). The new leaves from Nadia have such a beautiful colour and they haven’t started turning green yet.
Probably just as well I don’t have access to Alfie’s local nursery, I’d come away with dozens, with nowhere to put them!
That is incredible foliage colour on Nadia p-p. There was a new purchase posted by edhelka a while back that was pretty impressive too.
This has proved a bugger of a project, but the base of my new rose bed is finally taking shape. Won’t win any woodworking awards (bodger of the year, perhaps) but the curved end is finally finished:
It’s been lined with some rather fetching plastic tile backer sheets and had 6 bags of pine bark compost and 6 bags of manure dumped in. I will dig this into the horrible soil and continue to build it up with a dumpy bag of excavated soil and more compost and manure:
Looks very foreshortened there, but is much longer in reality, about 10ft x 4ft.
Looking forward to the new thread, I’ve enjoyed hosting it, but very happy - and a bit relieved tbh - to be passing the baton on!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
now that is a lot of young froggies @Mr. Vine Eye they should take care of any slugs around..
@Marlorena I had AD only for a year.. but it did impress me with the changing colour, number of blooms and scent.. Downside would be the gap between the flushes.. but each flush lasts longer than most roses..
