I want to add Ebb Tide. Can anyone who grows it confirm how large does it get?, conflicting info from various sources state anything from 600 to 1200mm width x upto 1200 high. I thought of it as a compact rose? Also, it's difficult to get a true colour representation as different sites illustrate it as anything between dark violet and maroon. I imagine it as a sensuous deep plum colour from a couple of stunning photos by, I think, @tack & @Eustace earlier this year. Is that accurate? Can anyone advise howw does the colour compare with Reine des Violettes? I think maybe @edhelka has both? thanks
@Tack - love the depotting method! Definitively helpful to have a second pair of hands.
Thanks all for the messages. He’s a week old now, very chilled and cute. Starting to be awake for longer and looking around. But oh the sleep deprivation is starting to really hit now.
At some point, now that little one is starting to rest for longer without having to be held I might be able to nip out and finish bulb planting. Need a break in the rain though too.
Not from now, but wanted to share something. Lady of Shalott is still booming nicely. I liked the combo of knautia and the chives low down. Just wish the knautia had been the dark red knautia Macedonica like I ordered.
Sadly haven't got there yet @Alfie_, but my local rose friend and I are planning a trip in spring. That's a real beauty you have there. I have Chandos B but still quite a tiny plant bought from elsewhere.
Ebb Tide did very poorly for me, owd. Ashridge Nurseries describe it as "low vigour, to 50cm" and say "It is only averagely healthy and is mainly grown for cutting, rather than for appeal in the border." And I think that's generous. Dieback, never got taller than 30cm even in its glory days of three whole canes.
@Mr. Vine Eye love your second photo. Cherish those moments 🤩 LoS is blooming well in that corner; probably thinks it is spring. @Alfie_ that's a very nice Chandos beauty. The fragrance from those blooms must be heady. @pitter-patter Ebbtide has done well for me; it is in a pot though. About 1.2m high. It has been blooming continuously for the past few weeks. It is the royal colour, dark plum. I took these photos just now with my cheapo phone camera, with no sunlight yet. Edited to add: if you're after the dark purple colour blooms, I would recommend Royal Celebration, though of medium fragrance. The plant is compact too. I don't have any flowers now to take a picture of, but you can do a search and see the photos I posted. Red roses are doing well, though the most of the plants have defoliated on their own. It's weird seeing the blooms without the leaves. Unknown red HT Ulmer Munster Papa Meilland

Thanks for response @Eustace, I think it was for me although you tagged pitter patter by mistake. It's as much the width of the plant as height that I am questioning, for positioning within the border that I am planning. PB list it as 75x75, HMF as upto 1.2x1.2 which now seems to be more accurate. Colour is stunning, and it is the plum colour that I remember form an earlier photo that I want.
@Eustace That’s perfectly fine. I always read all the posts anyway. I also have Ebbtide, so the information is useful. Mine hasn’t done too well this year. It strangely fell apart (it had some black stems) when I’ve removed it from the pot in spring, and hasn’t done too well after that. I have saved one of the rooted stems, so now I have a cutting as well. I bought it from Peter Beales because I was really impressed with the scent. I do love it, so hope it will do better next year. The photo is from last year.
@Eustace - that was summer! Haven’t got any recent photos but just wanted to post something. I found that photo when replying to someone in Facebook about LoS 🙂
Just caught up with 10 pages of posts after a busy time recently. @Mr. Vine Eye congratulations on the new son, don't think I could do the sleep deprivation now.😆 Sorry to hear of your ill health @bcpathome and having to give the care of your roses to the under gardener. They like you will hopefully be fine. Yes even after a heavy thunderstorm yesterday alot of roses are in flower. Desdemona, Celebration, the red standard, Blue Moon and Ruby Wedding. The Ruby Wedding I cut to take inside to protect from the cold, have lasted 10 days, its a pity it has no fragrance.
@owd potter This was my Ebb Tide back in July. I can't get purple right on my phone camera but it is very definitely a dark damson purple. I think of this as a small rose, no taller than .75m in a pot, it is 3 years old now. It's health is pretty good but it was coming into a very full flush during the heat and the blooms just shattered when no more than buds. Since then it has sulked. I like this rose and will give it a bigger pot and cosset it. The scent is strong. Some single or semi double blooms today; a velvet purple Forever Royal, Odyssey, Utopia and Ruby Mella
