All Thanks for well wishes. I am feeling a bit better today - it’s a really odd one this, can’t tell if it’s flu or cold or something else. Whatever it is it’s very strong.
I wasn’t planning to get any new roses but my parents were asking for Christmas ideas so I’ve had one just delivered apparently at their house, Dad’s put it in the shed until they can get it to me.
No rush as I’m not in a state to dig a hole at the moment!
Great to see your mature Mme. Antoine Mari again @Marlorena, which I got on your recommendation. Mine has filled out really well in two seasons so I’m thrilled with it, so I will just have to carry the torch on your behalf!
Thanks also for relating your experience with wood chip/bark, apparently 6 months of ageing is enough to leach out the phytotoxic tannins, but still, I would wait a year I think.
@pitter-patter that’s a lovely combination, you can pick your sweetpeas or roses and shake the pollen beetles out upside down, that usually works..
Hope you get over your lurgy soon too @Mr. Vine Eye, I’m so much better but still can’t seem to shake off some lingering effects of covid, the tiredness and brain fog. We are having 8 people for Christmas eve lunch and I’m dreading having to be alert and chirpy!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Does anyone have any views on the respective merits of Koko Loko and Mocha Rosa, please? I have decided to get Cathedral Bells (Soeur Emmanuelle) and one more rose as the snow has melted and the soggy ground has come into view again today.:)
I am losing track of the various Mmes but Marlorena's and Oliya's white rose are gorgeous.
@WhereAreMySecateurs ive got koko loko, im not impressed so far, had one flower off it this year! Lanky, blackspotted. Its by my big climbers so might be a bit of competition, so i will try extra feed etc this year, but I suspect its a slow burner.
Its very like the new zealand john fords from styles, they really do take a few years to do much and seem fussier, but worth it when established usually.
I got mme Antoine Maari last year on @Marlorena s recommendation, and in a very similar spot, very sunny front. It seems to be settling in now at least so hopefully does well next year.
My rose today is.. 'Tall Story'.. a modern shrub from Dickson roses, 1980's.. it has a good fragrance but I can't remember what of exactly.. It has a prominent place in my border and flowers continuously without cease..
Blooms open yellow quickly changing to white, and rambles gently. I'm liking this rose very much, health seems to be exemplary too..
A reference states ''The medium-sized blooms have a cool look, resembling butter fresh from the dairy''...
Lovely rose Marlorena, the dairy butter reference is very apt, looks good enough to eat.
Here’s one that rapidly became a favourite of mine, not a ‘shouty’ rose, but I have two in pots either side of my front door and love them. If you would like a Blush Noisette but don’t have the space, try this one..
Marie Pavie, Polyantha [Alégatière France, 1888]
A healthy, neat shrub that blooms all summer, almost continuously. The small blooms don’t last long so I need to deadhead regularly to keep it looking it’s best, but there are always lots more. Sweet, slightly musky fragrance that wafts beautifully on warm days. I believe it can get quite a bit bigger but I keep mine at around 2.5ft:

@Oliya, I grow Guy Savoy as a shrub. Tall, sturdy canes, so more a back of the of border rose than a shrubby shrub. It certainly has the vigour and capability to climb. Fragrance is very light to me, although TW and some other suppliers describe it as ‘very strong’. I do love the blooms, especially in cooler weather when the colouring is softer:
In hot weather the colour deepens and the stripes are less pronounced:

Totally off-topic but got Argentina in the office sweepstake so £100 coming my way. 😁 I feel a Trevor White order coming on.

@Nollie Do you grow your Guy Savoy as a shrub or a climber?
