That’s a hell of a lot of work for a holiday @newbie77, it better be a good one! Are you planning to return all those roses to pots or will some of those new areas form new rose beds?
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I love that @newbie77... you have all been so busy. Which roses have you put here in this shady bed by the trampoline? I just finished defoliating and pruning my Gertrudes out front (and survived) and noticed there is still space for two or more little roses out there. It doesn't get a great deal of sun, though... 4 hours perhaps in summer?
The two dry and unhappy-looking Harkness bareroots are "The Sun and the Heart" and "Well Being"... ironically. The nice potted rose is "Virginia McKenna."
Sorry for everyone who has lost their four-legged friend. Kipling said "Beware of giving your heart to a dog to tear"... and he was right.
There is all sorts, lots of favourites which were in my sunny patio originally, Elizabeth, Eustacia Vye, William Shakespear 2000(The Prince?), Jubilee Celebration, Love Song, Elle, Sharifa Asma, Heritage, Augusta Louise, Aquarell, Young Lycidas.
I think unless they struggle too much, I will leave it as it is. It will be a lot of cost to buy so much potting soil again and I do struggle to water so many pots in summer.
@WAMS, either keep those photos safe in case these roses don't revive or may be email now itself to Harkness.
@Nollie, it is not really a holiday but yes totally worth the effort. I am going to visit my mum for 2 weeks and and my mother in law for 2 weeks. We used to go in Easter break and Christmas break so two trips but with travel costs so high, this time doing a single trip and only time when kids have 4 weeks off is summer.
Roses from Harkness arrived... with a hole in the plastic wrapping the roots and the roots protruding from the top of the plastic. If they were moist when they were packed, they certainly weren't when they arrived. The stems have a bit of unsettling wrinkling going on, too... Like what is the point of digging out those nice long roots if you aren't going to pack them properly?😬
The potted one looks fine, though.
Looks like it’s spent a long time in storage, coming onto 4 months if they lifted in October. Really needs a day or two in a bucket or water to recover and probably a hard prune.
Weve finally had some rain here! Badly needed. The temperature has suddenly dropped again now though after a few mild spring days. Saw the years first bumble bee today. Hoping to plant some of my new hellebore etc and have a bit of a pre spring tidy over weekend. I wont feed yet but is it too early to mulch and manure the roses a bit? Thinking same for fruit trees as they are all really budding now with a few starting to open.
@JessicaS - Advice on RHS says to mulch mid to late Spring. I did it in April last year.
I think if you’re just targeting a specific plant you can do it whenever, same time as pruning.
Im going to mulch everything once it’s warmed up, as it’ll mean moving all the old rose leaves and fallen herbaceous stems which I’ve left so far because there are loads of mini beasts overwintering in there. I’ve seen lots of ladybirds active when the sun is shining. I don’t want to risk disturbing them too early.
I tidied up too early one year and didn’t see any of them again for months. Just had an aphid plague instead.
Ah yes good point thank you @Mr. Vine Eye ive left my leaves too as there are loads of bugs overwintering... I'll scrape the leaves aside to just do the trees as they seem to need it and several are in sunken pots without leaves but leave everything else for now then
