I've been idly browsing roses and looking especially at David Austin's. Can anyone explain to me the 'other' name his roses have? For example, Anne Boleyn is 'Ausecret'. I'm assuming that the 'Aus' is for 'Austin', but why have this name in the first place? And how are they decided?
@BlueBirder This is the Breeder's Code you're talking about.. they always begin with the breeder's name which is usually written in capitals, i.e. AUS .. the rest of it is a code chosen by the breeder, sometimes one can get little clues as to the breeding from these codes, but not with Austin's unfortunately.. These codes are registered with ICRAR.. International Cultivar Registration Authority for Roses... the codes are unique to each rose, this is important as roses can change names in other countries for commercial reasons.. the Breeder will send a rose to a nursery for introduction and the nursery will give it a commercial name... Austins do it themselves as they usually Trademark [TM] their rose names so nobody else can use them, and they are the nursery of introduction in any case..
It's a good way of making sure you don't buy the same rose twice, that may be marketed under different names.. For example, a popular rose sold here is called 'The Anniversary Rose' it has the breeder's code MEIclusif ... a few years ago this rose was sold under a different name.. 'Sweet Parfum de Provence'.. which was less of a commercial success, so they relaunched it under a different name.. but the breeder's code MEIclusif remains the same... That way, you know it's the same rose, if anyone bothers to check of course..
@Marlorena It is indoors, yes, on a windowsill. I’ve planted lots of rose seeds this winter. Hopefully some more with germinate. It looks like a carnivorous plant with that leaf edge. Of course, the seedling is really tiny.
Today is officially a good day, as the new border is finally dug and mulched.
Let the planting begin - as soon as it starts to warm up! I think by my initial plan I have managed to bring it all forward by about 2 weeks, thanks to some quite mild weather recently.
So this is now how it looks:

Hopefully now it will be easier, now that the digging, stone & root removal and mulching have been done. All the roses are in, thanks to all of you for your help in the choosing and planting advice.
Slowly, as the seasons' dictate, I will begin to get the perennials in along with some annuals.
Now I need to replant where the some of the roses came from.Rose Goujard is getting replaced by a Witch Hazel and the Unknown Yellow Rose is being replaced by the Contorted Hazel.
Well done @PeterAberdeen, that looks a sterling effort. Looking forward, as I expect you and your mother are, to seeing everything start to sprout and then to bloom. We shall expect photos!
Its very dry here too, ive had to water the new hellebore pots as they were bone dry! Bitterly cold too, and frost most of this week. My trevor white order apparently arrives tomorrow! I will probably just pop them in pots for now as not much time to plant this weekend and theres a lot of sprouting bulbs in borders I dont want to stand on...
Last year MPC bulk bags got delivered with a blue/red painted pallets and we really struggled to get rid of them. We took them to recycling centres and many wooden recycling places and no one has agreed to take them. I have been told the only way to dispose them are to throw in Bonfires and luckily we have managed to put it in the Skip with their permission. I have just placed an order for the Jumbo MPC bag and they've said they can't guarantee that it will be sent with a pallet unpainted. Does anyone come across a similar situation? how do you dispose the pallets please? Many thanks

thank you! That makes so much sense. I didn't realise that the names could be changed. I'll keep an eye out for any 'rebranding'!
