Apparently it's to attract "talent" to our financial sector. I assume this talent has more talent than the ones that caused a global financial crash in 2008?

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • tui34, unsure of the exact translation, hopefully you are telling me I'm a good person,or maybe too good for my own good,is one of those correct?

Too good and you'll be taken advantage of too much?

  • As I was saying.... friend has booked her jab almost 20 miles away,on the 1.10, now the trains are on strike. Now, am I going to offer to drive her to somewhere I don't know, almost 40 miles worth of fuel and likely parking charges.... knowing full well she won't offer any money. Her husband works for a company that does work on the rail electric system, get very good money, her money is all hers,to spend on herself,no kids, mortgage paid off. She doesn't want to bother him, asking for a lift!
My second word would be 'off'

@Nanny Beach ... I know that by nature you're a kind person and you like to help folk ... but healthy adults with reasonable good fortune are responsible for themselves.

If their car had suddenly broken down or her husband was taken ill, then of course it would be kind to offer ......... otherwise, let them get on with their lives ... if you keep offering they'll take advantage of your good nature for ever ... save your energies for those who have genuine struggles   :)

Thank you kind and thoughtful friends💓. In between all these jabs,I have to go and see both disabled sons. My hubby says I want to save the world, unlike his (I'll be polite!) Uncaring, unhelpful, unfriendly Mother....well, she does try to throw money at you. I cannot be bought! Said friend could have used her Noddle and booked her jab nearer. I'm sure no-one could possibly think I would tell anyone to FOXTROT OSCAR!
  • Actually,shall I tell my friend that I'm on strike,hehe.

Wasn’t that long ago that you were taken advantage of, Nanny Beach. You’ll need to practice being strong and firm with others. You have enough on your plate. You may feel more comfortable with a stock of reasonable and plausible excuses, ready rehearsed, if only to give yourself some breathing space before you decide to agree to something that may cost or inconvenience you.

The problem with strikes in my mind is that many directly inconvenience those who suffer most, and only indirectly affect those in charge. Must be better ways to make a point?

Just seen notification of three rail strike dates for early October. Rail fares are already beyond the means of many those who would wish to use them. It just seems like a vicious circle. The fares go up, those who then can’t afford them strike to get their own pay raised, and on and on. I did like the idea of providing free travel instead of striking. The only sufferers would be the coffers of the rail companies, and those carrying out the industrial action would get a darn sight more support from the public.
