some years ago @Hostafan1 gave us a canna … it’s grown and grown … we used to take it into the garage for the winter but during lockdown it had grown so big … we plonked it in an old plastic dustbin with some old MPC and it’s spent the last two winters shoved into the corner of the terrace … this spring we couldn’t even top up the compost because a pair of robins were nesting right behind it … so this year it’s just had water and once dose of tomato feed … it seems to do well on a diet of benign neglect …
I'm glad you enjoyed your birthday dinner @Lizzie27, sounds yummy.
Log man is coming with a big load this afternoon. I've been cutting branches on the trees up the drive with my battery chainsaw. The biggest job is taking them to the tip in the field, some dragged, some in the trailer. Last year the log man complained that they were getting too low and big for his trailer to pass and I've been meaning to do it for a while. It's just that it's hard work. Now I must clear up my gardening stuff in the barn to make room for the logs. Then more hard work stacking them. Thank goodness it's only 24° today, not 34°!
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
I’ve just seen the name of one of the towns for a change - Bergerec. Those of you who know France will know where they are.
For those who know " Bergerac " as the TV programme, John Nettles lives nearby as is a regular customer. Always very happy to chat to folk when they recognise him.
Hi folks, Back from sunny Wales (NOT). Sunday we had really heavy rain all day. Mind you we donned waterproofs and armed with buckets and spades headed to the beach. The boys couldn't care less about the weather and had a great time. Monday was better and we took the boys to an outdoor play area and zoo. It was really good value and we stayed all day. Then on Tuesday we finally got a sunny day on the beach so the boys got to go in the sea, make sand boats, eat ice-cream and generally have a great time. We drove home yesterday. Must admit it was lovely to sleep in my own bed. I've been out cutting back roses, quite disappointed with them this year, covered in blackspot. Hoping for a better second flush. Those fires were horrible Dove. Must be dreadful to watch all your memories go up in flames. Hugs for Hostafan hope you are filling a bit better. I have read back but having trouble remembering everything. Hope everyone has a good day.
Afternoon folks. Glad you enjoyed your b'day @Lizzie27. I gave up wearing heels yonks ago. I thought - OK, I'm short. I'll just be short. I've always gone about barefoot at home (and even out on occasions, in my younger days, channelling Sandie Shore). Sooo busy at the moment. But things coming together - someone very capable has agreed to organise an important part of the Food & Drink fair, so I'm pleased about that. And I'm keen we cater not just to the foodies buying their flavoured salts and oils etc on the street, but can get some actual food for free to families that need it and we think we can get the funding for that. Then there's the Black Dog Festival next week... And this evening we have a little do for another group I'm part of, where we have to provide refreshments. Not being a @D0rdogne_Damsel or @Dovefromabove I asked a friend to bake me something gluten free and vegetarian and she happily agreed. But they had a power cut so she's all behind and I'll have to drive over to her to pick them up. And I'm still not dressed!
Hello folks, very many thanks for more good birthday wishes, I do appreciate them.
I have to say though, unfortunately I've got a humdigger of a hangover today! Woke up at 3 am and wanted to die. Sat up for a hour or so then went back to bed, propped up on pillows and slept on and off till gone 10 a.m. I only had two glasses of a very fine prosecco! Thinking about the food, although beautifully cooked and presented, there wasn't a great deal of it so I'm presuming I consumed more alcohol as a proportion than food! Memo to self, only have one glass in future.
That sounds like really hard work @Busy-Lizzie, hope OH's appointment goes well.
Oh dear @Yviestevie, my sis and her daughter with the tiny twins and 5 yr old are holidaying in Pembroke this week, hope she's having better weather. Wales is always a bit of a gamble, weatherwise. I remember my mother throwing a right strop at midnight in the middle of a terrible storm on the side of a mountain. The rain was running right through the middle of the tent and out the other side. She made my dad strike the tent, pack up everything and drive us all home.
Lizzie one of Secondborn's colleagues was camping in Wiseman's Bridge. They only lasted a day before booking into a Hotel. We were at Saundersfoot in a flat about 100 yds from the beach. We just got soaked and came back for a hot shower and hot chocolate, we were fine. I think the weather was due to improve towards the end of the week.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
