.. loads of lovely roses today, blooms and those waiting in the wings.. no problem with that, they will be flowering when our early ones are taking a break.. nice doggy too !..
Talking about fragrance, I was working around this bed today. In the pictures below these two are about 3ft apart in the same bed. Obviously more blooms are out on the Celebration rose ( which to me has a medium old rose fragrance) , but the fewer blooms of Blue for You overpowered it easily ( its fragrance is of turkish delight ) This fragrance follows you around this end of the garden, it's lovely.
When people say "I don't like roses" I imagine they are thinking of an HT lollipop. I fail to see how anyone could object to a thing of wonder like those piled allotment roses, jostling with quince, apricot and peach trees.
Gorgeous roses on that allotment. Nice really that so many people can enjoy them there, not just your direct neighbours glancing in as happens with most back garden masterpieces.
It's hard to say why people do and don't like particular flowers. WRT roses, I like as a rule both HTs and lollipops 😁 but have a strange and deep aversion to those very very very cupped ones, like DA's Mill on the Floss (apologies if anyone adores that rose)
I guess it depends when you think of roses, what time of the year you are thinking about. At the moment all roses in my neighborhood are looking great. August onwards a lot of them will start to look worn out.
I'm not a fan of super-packed roses that look like triples. Too over-produced for me. Like a high budget, Hollywood movie rose.
It looks like my Deep Secret is going to be a pom-on-a-stick. A short, one cane wonder. (That's what I mean by 'lollipop', in a degoratory sense). I'm not sure I can be bothered with it.
