Agree that Salvia Mainacht is great. I’ve got loads, it’s easy to root from cuttings. More than I thought actually as I discovered a few more pots of it while sorting the general ‘growing on’ pot corner.
Another great salvia, which I will try and get some cuttings from this year, is Blackcurrant sage - it flowers for ages and the scent from the leaves is amazing!
RE the birds - they’re just not interested in the bird feeders. The food goes rotten before it’s touched. I’ve tried having them in different spots but it makes no difference. They just come for the aphids.
We do get blackbirds regularly at least. But the sparrows and great tits/blue tits are just at this time of year. I suppose it does mean we appreciate them more when they are here.
Lots of birds down at the allotment though, very used to people there.
I keep saying it, but I’m sure I’ll have a bloom by the end of the week! 😄
@Mr. Vine Eye what are you putting in your bird feeders?
How long does Mainacht flower for? And how drought tolerant?
I planted Salvia nemorosa 'Marcus'last year in a sandy bed, full sun, and it flowered for only a few weeks and it seems like it hasn't come back. I wonder if it didn't get enough water or a three week bloom is normal.
My main mainacht is in a part shade bed, it flowers well but it for very long, a few weeks sounds right. The one’s I’ve planted in more sun might do for longer.
@Fire I planted a salvia Marcus a few years ago. It barely lasted the night! Slugs....
@Tack I'm waiting for the dust to settle as it were, before deciding what to plant to replace the lost trees. My little woodlandy garden ( it's really not very big) got off lightly, just one alder lost. The spruce trees are still to be cleared, but there is a yew tree that survived, so that's a starting point.
Phew, roses mostly escaped storm damage but have shed their paling, tatty foliage left over from the earlier frosts and actually look better for it! Lots of leaf confetti to pick up, especially Austins and Lady Em in particular, but the latter drops it’s leaves if you so much as cough in it’s direction. Serendipity perhaps, that the first flush was retarded.
New window looks great @Tack. I moved my Diamond Eyes to a pot and am hoping for a better performance than when it was overshadowed in the ground. Edited to say, I had heard Eden was a slow developer Tack..
Mainacht flowers for a long time for me in full sun and repeat flowers fast if you cut the old flower stalks down. It does seem to be a slug ‘n snail magnet though @Fire from what Newbie is saying, it’s certainly the one my few snails go for.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
What i have observed is slug/snail have some priority fav list. In my previous garden firstly there were more slugs than snails and they had more favourite items on menu. My salvias survived there and flowered well. When i started this new garden, i didnt plant t anything that i had lost in previous garden, so they went on their next fav and had chosen salvias. Another inetersting thing is slugs are very lazy, usually they eat things on ground and whatever they attack they completely finish but they avoid going high up in pots and plants. Snails are more adventurous and can climb up a very tall dahlia in a pot on paved patio to munch on buds but they don't totally finish my plants.Â
My little Ghislaine is doing well. Not clear from the photo, but she is up to about two ft and putting on good height fairly fast. Planted about Feb this year. V please. She's in a daft cranny.
