Good morning. Quick question. I planted a couple of bare root roses back in November, Lark Ascending and a Whiter Shade of Pale, but I stupidly planted them way too close to my neighbour’s fence 🙄(about 6”). They are growing really well and look very healthy. My question is, can they be moved now or will it be end the of the world for them to grow that close to the fence? Apologies for silly question. Thanks in advance.
I'm sorry to hear about your dog @Penny_Forthem. That's a nice way to remember her.
@Allyblueeyes, my Lark Ascending is about 4x4.5' if you were wanting to grow it as a nice round shrub. Personally I would risk moving it now but I have heavy moisture retentive soil so see what others say.
I don't need the pole anymore @Marlorena, after extending the bed most of the line was over the flower bed so I have moved it so it follows the lawn/path. The pole was on a slight angle which always aggravated me. I considered growing something up it but an obelisk would be much nicer. I'm probably going to try the Harkness rose Glyndebourne in the hole. Harkness describes it as 'willowy' which I interpret as possibly needing support but will see how it gets on. I won't buy anything until winter anyway.
I sometimes plant quite close to a fence, with narrow borders I haven't got a lot of choice, but it's ok if it's a rambler type, or with the intention to train across the fence. You could do that with The Lark Ascending..
'The Anniversary Rose'.. 'Tottering by Gently'.. obelisk trained.. ..some Old Roses,.. 'Mutabilis' on the right.. ..with arches I think it's best to have the same rose either side, even though I've not done that here, which makes it look discordant.. too bad, I'm hoping the clematis come out very soon.. ..my shingle beach, now with a beached boat...
..thanks Zugenie, I thought it was fun thing to do.
I'm also seeing some early black spot, but hopefully the recent frosts are out of the way for now, and some of you will surely have some roses blooming before too long. Mine are still a way off I think, maybe end of the month..
Oh I've just noticed @Woodgreen with a first bloom - Lovely !.. too bad about the b.s. though..

It's always the first to bloom here @Marlorena, and the last. Such a mild winter, then the heat last month....I'm still not sure whether that flower is a late last or an early first!
..yeah, some of these old roses can be early to flower, well worth having I think..
.. a few more pics today.. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.. group of 3.. in very sandy, stony conditions indeed.. ..a few bits and bob.. Iberis 'Appen Etz' is such a sparkler.. Rhodanthemum 'Tangiers' / Helianthemum 'Supreme'.. very early.. Tulip 'Lady Jane' / Brunnera 'Jack Frost'..

The black spot appeared well before this first flower. I've never known that happen before.
