Well I had a great trip to the Cervantes rose garden in Barcelona yesterday - not! There were roadworks everywhere and so many perplexing diversions in the centre we ended up driving in circles for hours. The satnav was having kittens, we got turned around and drove the massive length of the Diagonal in the wrong direction, tempers were thoroughly frayed and when we finally managed to get there there was no parking to be found for love nor money. Gave up, returned home defeated and vowed never to visit Barcelona ever again!!
So I’m consoling myself catching up with all the lovely roses on here instead. Sorry if I’ve missed any notifications, they and my internet are playing up at present.
@JessicaS, yes RdeR is quite strongly scented. The olive green leaves are pretty distinctive, as is it’s compact habit. How tall was the hedge?
Hmm, yes, I expect I really would get into trouble growing a rose up OH’s precious fig tree @Marlorena, peace sounds better! Mme. Lauriol de Barny and Botzaris blooms are exquisite.
@Imprevu at least my two baby Prince’s are alive, I thought I had lost them but managed to nurse them back from death. Not so my Souvenir de St Anne’s, two more canes died and now I’m down to one. Time to dig it out, sadly.
Today’s selection includes Blush Noisette, still waiting to go in the ground, poor thing: First bloom on new Dominique Loiseau, not much to look at yet:
Another newbie first, Catherine Guillot just opening a smallish bloom:
Palais Biron missed it’s purple phase entirely due to sudden heat:
Darcy Bussell:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations @Nollie .. I suspect we all know the feeling on British roads.. but that was a bummer for sure.. I expect it's a nice garden too that you missed.. Catherine Guillot looks good I must say.
From what I gather on their IG page, it's this years pictures as they will visit to photograph the winning rose, which is why it's not available to those overseas [much to their chagrin]..Â
'Narrow Water' This is very vigorous and easy to grow. 'Chippendale' And my Pheno geno rose. I bought it as 'Mileva', it was in Frayla collection and also in Taste of love. Now, TW sells it as 'Ava', still in both collections. Pheno geno website calls it 'Renee van Wegberg' and only lists it in Taste of love. The breeder's code is 'Bozmilefra'. A lot of petals, this first bloom refuses to open fully. As expected for a very fragrant rose (strong, raspberry), the petals are delicate and can sometimes suffer in wet weather but I wouldn't say it has problems with balling. It had some early blackspot, probably because I have it in a smallish pot and was a bit late with spring feeding. The new growth is healthy. TW describes it as a small rose - 50x70cm. HMF 60 to 80cm. I don't think it's that small and I think I should repot it to a bigger pot.
pfft poor you , it has been pre covid since I have been in BCN but I remember the busy roads and the never rest atmosphere of the city. Too busy ! I have been mainly there for business but often enough to get that feeling . My colleague from BCN was also stating the weather is odd the last months .also here this week 29 degrees expected ! No winter , super dry spring and already really hot weather .
my second bloom on pink cloud opening today.Â
My first MH bloom is also open but it is such a tiny and I hope atypical bloom …Â
Well Vic Keltjens at Tuincentrum Lottum knew what he was doing when he advised hard pruning the Eden Standard that appeared to be in a petrified state since receiving it in Dec, new pic of shoots breaking out everywhere and only 14 days after the chop.
What might have been the problem and why did pruning the canes to 10-15cm kickstart it, does anybody know?
I noticed today that The Anniversary Rose that finally appeared to be leafing is now losing some of those, it looks horrible. I've contacted PB the seller.I love your Chippendale @Edhelka so got one but it has pretty bad mildew (not Arthur de Sansal levels thank goodness), do you find this a problem?
Well I was always baffled why people rave about Barcelona, I try and avoid it usually. OK it has some interesting architecture, but it’s crowded, expensive, the ramblas is a rip-off, the beaches mediocre, it’s so huge you pound so much pavement getting from one must-see to another it becomes an endurance test not a joy. Must be getting old! Disappointing not to get to the garden though, I was looking forward to seeing some of Pedro Dot’s roses especially.
I like the relaxed water-shot blooms of your Lady Waterlow @pitter-patter. It’s such a time investment waiting years for climbers to come into their own, which doesn’t always pay off. But when it does ❤️Â
