Gaura are also very easy to propagate. They’re one of the plants that roots quickly in water. I snipped bits off cuttings that had already rooted in water, and popped the snippings back in the water and then those rooted too!
We’ve had some rain, ground looks better but it’s barely touched the water butts. We were originally forecast for two full days of rain followed by a few more days later on in the week. But now it’s only a few hours this afternoon of light rain and then two more weeks of dry 😒
We had a real downpour yesterday, flash flooding, and it went on long enough to make a difference. My water butt was filled in no time. Might get some more tonight.
@Tack Sorry you didn't get any rain, hope you get some tonight, it's getting dire.. I know you have 'Wild Rover' and I know you like to try your hand at seeds, and very successfully too. I've used this one and got a climber out of it, but it didn't flower in the first year, nor the 2nd, so I didn't persevere. I understand most seedlings when they do flower will likely be orange-ish.. Obviously these aren't ready and just my normal prunings, but it does produce lovely hips in winter to try..
Thanks for the tip about Gaura cuttings MrVineEye, I will do just that. My white one like yours is a favourite.
The climbers are ready to start blooming again, here are Kew Gardens, TGG and Claire AustinEdit cross post with Marlorena. Oooh that is interesting, will try, thank you. Just had a 30 min light shower, fingers crossed for more.
..we're having another tropical thunderstorm here the like of which one rarely sees.. the sky is dark grey, the wind is ferocious and the rain is driving..Â
@purplerallim you're probably not far from me, are you getting it too?..Â
Hi @Dabolem, Palais Biron (Purple Lodge) is south-east facing, so does get very strong sun for some hours, also it’s close to a stone retaining wall which gets hot. Overall it’s heat resistance is very good, but the blooms have unsurprisingly fried a little this horrible year and are smaller. Like all ‘purple’ roses it would be better in just morning sun. Fragrance is deep and complex. Foliage is tough, grey-green with good disease resistance. Last summer was cooler so the blooms were larger with more petals:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
We've had only 2mm so far with storms missing us to East and West according to weather radar. The butt off the house roof filled 2/3 at least. I hope no damage is inflicted on you all.
I like your rose recommendations Nollie, but its funny how I prefered it being Palais Biron . Here is one I got bareroot last winter because of you; Soul, it is a beauty, not as pinky as these pics, more red. No heat damage or disease so far.
Here in Liverpool we’ve only had a few hours of light drizzle yesterday.. hardly made a difference to my water butt at the plot..Â
The much cooler weather is a much welcome break though…!Â
The roses at the plot and on my balcony all seem to have loved the heatwave and finally gone into their second flush..Â
Roald Dhal, Munstead Wood x2, DesdemonaÂ
Etoile de Hollande - a mega star for me this year.. it has successfully climbed up my trellis and the fragrance certainly has a wafting quality to it.. it really was a real treat to sleep with my balcony door open during the heatwave when these were in bloom..
