I like a cool pinky red, but warm reds fade to a particular shade of pink that seems to jar especially with orange, I find. Thus my red, purple and orange border never really worked!

@peteS Heya.. yes 'Cornelia' is untroubled by rain and scented, a nice warm musky fragrance that wafts when the plant is large enough.. healthy too, no real issues. As for pot culture, I've never tried it that way, it's not a small rose, it likes to grow wider than tall. individual blooms are small but those I'm getting now are half size due to drought.
As for red roses, I think every rose garden should have one.. it acts as a relief from all the pastel pinks.. a garden can look rather twee without a red rose, as it adds a masculine contrast.. Just a personal opinion..
..lovely borders @tack I think we've only caught tantalising glimpses before..
Lovely roses everyone. I can almost smell them when i see them on screen.
I like red roses. To me everything blends in garden or may be i am not very particular about combinations. In a vase though, I find tricky to combine an HT shaped rose with Austin style rose regardless of colours so I make separate vases.
..seeing red through green I think is very nice. The two colours go so well together...
'The Country Parson'..
..an old fashioned look, with an old fashioned scent which matches anything in todays world... ''Surpassing Beauty''.. I lost it to the new fence. I've had to re-order one..
Which type of rose are you thinking of @Mr. Vine Eye ? As in climber, floribunda etc. Have you got a space in mind? It will be fun for all of us to make suggestions but I wonder how helpful for you that would be!
Does Munstead Wood count as red, mine certainly is a dark velvety red today but I thought Mr Vine Eyes had this one. I meant to say earlier Jessica, that Natalja is gorgeous, as is your Wisteria. Difficult to pick out favourites from the deluge of lovely roses coming on here but Harlow Carr is tempting me, is it Pitter Patter that has the Standard? I wonder when DA will sell those potted again? I think my Eden Standard is springing into life so maybe I shouldn't. I don't like Standards afteral
Thank you for the nice comments. The borders are only like that temporarily while new larger shrubs grow. It is dry dry rooty shade and I have been watering a lot already, just not sustainable. At least instead of long stretches of running or selfseeding Snowberry, Hypericum, Mahonia and Philadelphus there will be more variety.
How is it that you are away for a few days ( stay in hospital) and you come back to everything popping out in flower. My white climber ( unknown b&q) has this one, with many buds to open. I think you can just see the invader in its petals, in the warm sun it is just glowing. My Blue for You has its first opening buds, sorry for the fuzzy picture And my white Whisteria are just opening, a three year old plant Plus The Prince is in full flow.
@Marlorena, that Surpassing Beauty is looking so sumptuous. The one I can keep in a vase at desk and touch and feel and smell all day.
@tack your border sounds like my borders. Rooty shady. Thankfully mine isnt dry type, it retains water so I am able to grow roses after digging out a lot of Snowberry and grass in front of shrubs.
