@cooldoc ..yes,.. and I'm not getting any younger.. I've decided bare earth looks rather nice after all, it's nothing but dust here anyway.. ..these arrived from Peter Beales, so it'll be more of this sort of thing.. which I like..
Hello, just jumping in for a little advice please.
I have a rose that was gifted to me 3 years ago before I was really paying attention to the garden. It's a David Austin rose but I don't know the variety. My assumption was that it's a shrub rose and I've been cutting it right back each winter, but it seems to just want to gow as tall as it can. This year and last it's sent up two or three tall stems, has a few flowers at the top then once those are done it the stems keep growing. For reference it's a 6ft fence in the picture, and by last autumn it was around 4ft over the top of the fence. It's flopping over a little now as you can see, I'll probably stake it upright.Â
I'm a total beginner with roses. Am I doing something daft or is this actually not a shrub rose or something? Thanks in advance.Â
Heya..  it's a shrub rose but also wants to be a climber, and you are having the same problem everyone has with this rose.. if you cut it back it'll only shoot up again, as it naturally wants to be tall, and the blooms tend to appear on the top..
I got rid of mine for this purpose, it got on my nerves, but if you want to keep it, you will have to adapt to its lanky habit, or keep cutting it back like you do but you'll be forever fighting this rose I think.. I never got many blooms either.. I think you'll just have to try and enjoy it for what it is..
Does the name 'The Mill on the Floss' mean anything to you?...Â
Get well soon @purplerallim. I understand how difficult it is to have covid in this hot weather. My OH had it only last week and has now tested negative. I am unaffected and have been testing negative all along. @cooldoc you have nice roses; thanks for sharing. @Nollie lovely yellows. The yellows in here are rather trouble-free and floriferous too; Golden Showers, Golden Celebration, Arthur Bell, Korresia. @Tack good that you could move most of your pots to the shade. Unfortunately mine are in the fully-paved front garden and too heavy to be moved. To keep them hydrated, I have kept a terracotta pot filled with water for each of the potted roses. @Marlorena in spite of downsizing, I'm sure you will still have very many roses 🌹🌹🌹 to share with us. Only because of WFH arrangements, I have been able to devote some attention to roses the past 2 and a half years; otherwise it is only the weekends 😀Â

I had loads of post to catch up on so wrote a few notes so I could remember to comment.
Beautiful, floriferous rose bed that you have your Grace in, @Fran IOM, what is the lovely yellow on the right please? It's a post dated from 5 July (sorry, had a hectic few weeks and got behind).
Wonderful mix of colours in your overhead view of the garden @cooldoc, and I still love your Lyda. Last week my Alfred Colomb crisped up in the heat, just as you were asking before.
Love the colours, sky and lighting in your pic of the arch and (I think) meadowsweet @Fire
Welcome @Veilchenblau, lovely roses and garden, thank you for sharing them. Had to snigger as the first thing I did was google Snow Goose and I see many others had the same thought , I can't have a tender rose unfortunately. I really like that fluffy petal look it has though.
Nice to see you back @celcius_kkw. I'm glad you posted your Port Sunlight, you have a beautiful rose. I also like the leaf arrangement and manner of growth which are interesting to me. I have this rose in year one and it hasn't produced any buds as yet but I feel positive looking at yours that it will be worth the wait. Also loved the photos of Roald Dahl with the glowing city view in the background, fabulous.
I didn't take a pic of this when it looked the sweetest, I will try and get another. First year Georges Vibert
Cute, Nuits de Young
Rambling Rosie still looking good. The flowers fade in a useful way, not unattractively.
I was just thinking this week, I wonder what happened to my container order from Beales and it arrived. I didn't get an email as others did. Very happy with them though, Raymond Carver left and Perennial Blue on right.  My ground is unworkable at the moment, I can't even jab a cane in and I don't have enough water to sort it out so at the moment they are living in these tubs (I've cut the string off now).
@dabolem about CPM, I have it in on a north-facing fence, most of the day in shade. It has those octopussy canes, that is why I tried to make a wall of roses along with Gertrude Jekyll as shown below: https://forum.gardenersworld.com/discussion/comment/2496680#Comment_2496680 It has had mild mildew due to my irregular watering, but has grown out if it. The fragrance is fruity; the second flush has just started. Mine is in its third year, but I prune it hard during winter as I would like to have it shorter rather than a climber. HTH.

Not sure it rings a bell but happy to assume you're correct. I'll have to have a think about it then. Thank you for the advice.Â
Hi, I'm new to the forum but have several roses including 4 from DA and I struggle with them all! Your rose is lovely and I wonder if you knew about and/or wanted to look up how to arch the branches when they are long enough - there's a specific name for the proper the process I forget but it does trick the rose into flowering along the branch rather just at the end.

May I ask, why are you downsizing @Marlorena too much maintenance? wish I could come and collect all those that you are throwing off..Â
