@Tack I would prefer my flowers to have different shape and scent.. I like how some of the Austins evolve from bud to final stage and I love how some of them remain deeply cupped.. sometimes in the same plant.. same with the colour.. some fading away and some having the halo effect.. Fragrance would be the main factor for me.. atleast a medium scent should be present.. or else I am not going to keep them..Ā could you tell me why you are ditching Claire Austin?
@Fire for me MW is a keeper..Ā but then, as Marlorena used to say, 'life is too short'.. so don't worry about it.. MW for me is fragrant and floriferous.. disease resistance may not be its strong forte.. The day I decide strictly no spray in my garden, I might re-think about it...
Love that Gallica Officinalis.. does it rebloom? I thought it was a once bloomer??
@cooldoc. Rosa gallica officinalis is indeed once flowering but puts on such a good show that I don't mind that. I like the romance of its having been grown for around 500 years, and the various names for it like 'The Apothecary Rose' . I think it's also thought to be the red rose of Lancaster? This and Rosa alba 'Celeste' and 'Queen of Denmark' are usually disease free here too. The foliage is coarser than modern roses so maybe that's something to do with it, I don't know.
I think I am out of the "I want as many different rose varieties as possible" phase. At the moment, I would prefer more of bigger/show-stopper roses. I would like to make space for more climbers but that's almost impossible. I would also like more hydrangeas, their flowering season comes just when the roses peak is over. But I don't feel like doing any major changes or removing established plants in the ground.
So far, I've been happy with most of the new roses.
Blooming today:
'The Prince' NoID HT 'Scarborough Fair' 'Faustinia' my favourite shade of yellow and I love the fragrance. @Tack Do you also have 'Julia Child'/AbFab? Do they have very similar fragrances? 'The Bees Knees' 'Silas Marner' 'Purple Skyliner', the main flush is mostly over but still some nice clusters. 'Saphir' And from my mother's garden, 'Grossherzogin Luise'/'Spicy Parfuma', a Kordes HT
Thank you for posting the GW link @WhereAreMySecateurs, I too thoroughly enjoyed that segment. I loved The Apothecary Rose too, shame it is a once bloomer. I can see why you liked that cream rose Fire.
I am not ditching Claire Austin Cooldoc. The Sleep, Creep, Leap Austin mantra has proved very true with this rose (and Wollerton), it's being magnificent this year. I resisted MW for so long but it is just gorgeous and so far, extremely healthy.
Edit after @edhelka's post. I get the aniseedy scent in both Faustinia and AbFab but the former also gives off a nectarine flavour and is more strongly scented. I think the pale lemon colour is really pretty and so far it has bloomed well. Promising
Eyes for you.. I went back again and again to sniff this today.. the scent was so strong.. covered in buds and well behaved unlike many others which throw long canes..
Stephanie d'Ursel.. 1st year.. Fragrant and always in bloom.. throws long canes with a cluster of buds at the end..Ā
Well being.. smells like Lady EH..
Enchantress... loving the form and scent..
Amazing Day.. always in bloom.. clusters ready to open when one is done.. strong stout necks which hold the blooms well.. scent is, 'Amazing'..
Julia Child.. Still in first flush or continuous bloomer? blooms stay long but does fade to pale yellow..Ā
Twilight Zone.. had two flushes last year.. this year it never stopped producing buds.. mild weather helped preventing the edges from being crisped.. Not strongly fragrant for me (as advertised).. would rate it as medium on the good day..
love that Spicy parfuma colour.. how is the fragrance? @edhelka I used to think that it would produce single blooms on a stem (as with Royal Parfuma/ Grafin Diana)..
Edit; forgot to post this.. Super Trouper.. what a bright orange.. agree with Eustace on its vibrant colour.. if only it had a scent.. potted this one in a DA pot.. (Awaiting new owners)
⦠I find I am developing a full blown āother secret gardenā in my mental landscape. Itās full of pink and gold roses, old roses and once blooming ramblers. It very beautiful, for what itās worth. š

MW, mother plant..
Lady EH..
Gabriel Oak.. colour has the 'Halo' effect.. half of the petals face down and remaining half up (like a lotus) before being fully flat..
Poets wife.. scented even after 5 days in bloom...
Boscobel..
