@Marlorena Is that leaf colour from a recent photo or old one..? asking coz leaf colours do darken over time.. (my Golden Celebration did that) I am back in London for work.. only opened the forum to avoid binge reading all the posts later.. I remember a few others ordering it.. was it @Tack
@cooldoc ..yes it does smell of myrrh, or fruity, citrusy, I like it very much, but the bloom isn't fully open yet, and I'm not sure it's the same as in your photo. The pictures of the leaves I took just a short time ago.. they don't look anything like what I'm seeing in your photos. I can't believe we have different roses..Â
Mine did not have that fruity DA scent.. it was similar to Scepter'd Isle.. (not that refined, smelt similar to Julia Child actually, but the scent was strong on the first day)
Here BMS is in its mildewy, munched glory, also sulphur blotches, pleasant scent but not strong or myrrhy tonight. Golden Beauty behind with the stronger colour btw. Any eyelashes on the stipules were curled down and difficult to find, focussing was difficultThe patio yellow collection. BMS bottom right, same colour as Faustinia top right. Also Charles Darwin, Malvern Hills and Golden Beauty.
@Tack ..thanks for those pics, appreciate that very much..  I think it must be the same, the thorns in particular look identical to mine.. I was beginning to think they'd sent me Jude the Obscure..  I see you have leaf cutter bees too.. It's funny but sometimes the same rose in other gardens can all look a little different.
@Marlorena, this is my Penelope. It's on a raised bed, 3 sleepers high, in front of a 4ft wall with a 6ft fence on top of the wall. Rose now measures abt 12ft wide x 5-6ft high. (Different levels between houses). Not sure if the metal fence would work in front/underneath the blooms which are all this year's growth. There is also another similar rose in front of it.
Any ideas welcome - from anybody. Would an underslung rope swag work?
Phew I’ve only just managed to catch up with all the beautiful photos! My new allotment life has kept me very busy.. my roses were lagging a little because I did not get to prune and feed them in time till almost end of March this year..Â
Nonetheless they’re all showing colours now..Â
Etoile de Hollande in my large pot - it is doing so much better this year..Â
First bloom of Boscobel - it has the sweetest scent (with good hint of liquorice) - always put a smile on my face when put my nose to it..Â
Munstesd wood - now in the ground at my allotment plot and it’s really transformed - a few of its branches are still spindly but overall it just looks so much healthier now..Â
Another shot of Etoile..Â
Lady of shallot - I am thinking of installing a mini obelisk in this pot and semi train my LoS going round and round - it does have climber tendency and I wonder if training it laterally on an obelisk might produce more blooms?Â
Etoile once more.. because it’s been a star for me this year..Â
@Tack your Dame de chen is post rose perfection! How’s the fragrance? Does it stand up to strong wind? I am tempted..Â
Does anyone here have experience growing the climbing rose ‘Compassion’ or ‘Aloha’ ? I am thinking of growing one up an arch at my allotment.. as always scent is the most important factor for me.. followed by health. Luckily my allotment plot is in a sheltered location (a complete opposite to my balcony!) so I should hopefully not have to worry about strong winds with that one..Â
.. @celcius_kkw .. your Etoile is looking great, we've followed your progress with that rose since you had it, so it's good to see it looking something like the way you wanted it to.. I can tell you're pleased with it too... glad to hear all is well at your allotment.. I loved the scent on Boscobel..
@Lizzie27 wow, your Penelope is gorgeous too, when I had it, it never looked like that in June, so I swapped it for 'Cornelia, which has similar dimensions, a little shorter in height. I don't think that fencing would look right, with the wooden fence behind, and I'm not sure you need anything really, it looks nice as it is, but obviously you feel you need something. Â
Here's my 'Cornelia' against those railings, but otherwise it's an open site, and no fence behind it. I just think it would look odd, and they're not cheap to buy..
Otherwise I've no idea how to help there, perhaps another member has good design ideas for your situation Lizzie..
