On the topic of Chandos Beauty - can I check if it would be ok if I pruned down one of the canes ( there are perhaps 3 or 4 good ones) by about half or more? There are 3 gorgeous flowers on it ( so I will let those do their thing for a bit) , but I didn't pay attention to direction of bud when i pruned in march - it is basically pointing straight out across the neighbours' front door ( london terrace with only a v low edging type boundary). On the upside, they get the best view and scent of the flowers, but although they haven't complained,  it must be annoying to have to move it out of the way each time they go in.

(Edit to add-- Otherwise if this is a really bad idea then I'll just try and get a diy obelisk-type support set up and somehow try train it a bit less obstructively)

Not a problem at all, just cut it off where you want... I never let anything drift over to my neighbours.  I would just cut the stem and pop it in a vase, although I recall they don't always open or last long in a vase, but that's what I would do..
In future I would always remove any stem that was going in a direction I didn't want it to go..

Ive got open arms, it definatley needs support, long whippy tendrils! Easy to flex and tie in though.
