The so called myrrh scent, which one either likes or doesn't, is a result of hybridisation as it is not found in any specie rose.. it was also around long before Mr Austin's association with it.. my favourite is the apple/clove scent..
@peteS Yes I used to have that rose, I didn't like it much until the 3rd year..eventually it grew to be around 6 x 6 feet, and was quite magnificent, but needed support during rain, as the heavy canes would flop down somewhat.. Beautiful light pink buds too, and grey foliage in Spring..  dislikes hard pruning, and best treated with a light touch.. best of luck with yours..Â

I have roses with better health, stronger fragrance etc but these are the ones I keep in vase and love to smell whenever I get a chance. My sense of smell has reduced post Covid.
I avoid smelling in garden because there are always some tiny spiders hiding in rose. If they waft then good else only in vase after thoroughly checking for spiders.Â
Actually I like to smell the myrhh types Strawberry hill, Sceptred Isle etc just because they feel so different, so sort of curiousity. Until I had these, I never thought roses will smell like that. They smell like fragrant erasers and rubber toys to me.Â
Thought I'd share a picture of my new rose border and also to thank everyone who offered advice and answered my questions For those interested the roses I chose are: Harlow Carr, Dunham Massey, Felicia, Scepter'd Isle and Cornelia. I'm in the process of tracking down Mme Isaac Perriere but may have to wait until bare root season
I don't have many roses @Rojas but of those I have my favourite fragrance by far is Blue for You. Its turkish delight fragrance follows you around the garden . Then it would be Sheila's Perfumed Celebration White climbing rose (unknown b&q) Arthur BellÂ
Looking great @andrewnewton, look forward to seeing it develop..
I barely have any blooms at all in the garden, just the odd one here and there and it feels very strange to be in what feels like August dormancy in June. The temperatures have eased off thankfully and we even had some rain, so the roses are rallying and putting out new growth. Finger’s crossed they get a chance to bloom before it gets too hot again!
Still going, Rose de Rescht and little own-root Munstead Wood:
On the other hand, summer Echinaceas and Heleniums are in full flow!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Thanks for that @Marlorena...it's always better getting to know the growing habits first hand from someone who has actually grown something, rather than rely on the sellers own spiel, which often paints a different picture. Now I know it's ultimate size, it can go where my 'Tuscany Superb' is now, where it will have plenty of room to develop. I'm digging up my TS in the autumn as it's been a major flop this year for some reason, masses of growth with lovely looking foliage, but not a single bloom.

Thrilled to have lots of blooms on my first ever rose - Buff Beauty.Â
