Ena was supposed to be a climber but she never climbed. She's been in around ten years and has one major flush and not much the rest of the year. She has a great scent on the first day of opening and not much after. I like her best in bud and just before opening, but the blooms get blousey and blobby after a day or two and falls apart. She's had a good run but I'd like to try something else that gives a bit more.
It's a tough spot - with late west sun, full sun every third year. I'm amazed she grew at all. I hankered for 'roses around the door' and would like to give another go.
Photos from mottisfontās rose garden, they had really down played the amount of roses in bloom, I was expecting to only see climbers but quite a few of the shrub roses were in bloom too! I thought the first section of the walled garden was it and was so disappointed, then we went through to the actual rose garden and I was so relieved š I wonāt post the names for most but if you want to know one tell me and I will see if I got a picture of the label
City of York, the scent was divine, you could smell it just standing nearby which is exactly what I was after so Iāve got this one to train up the front of the house
Mortimer sackler aka Mary Delany, I was thrilled to see this looking so lovely and smelling great as itās what Iāve planted in the border out the back!
I wouldnāt be thrown too much by the colour of @murasakiās Munstead Wood photo folks. Camera rendering aside, mine is more often a bright pinky red than the ātrueā colour, which I only get anywhere near in cool Springs and sometimes late Autumn. I am completely thrown by the size though! Wow, Angela is impressive murasaki šĀ
Anyone else getting really impatient waiting for new roses to show their faces? Mine seem to be especially slow this year. Iām still waiting on buds to burst forth on Line Renauld (Dee-Lish), Ducher, Mutabilis, Alister Stella Gray plus two French freebies Paul Neyron and Gloire de Ducher.
New Souvenir de Marcel ProustĀ [Delbard] made his debut today, large, upright 4ā/10cm bloom (nearly twice the size of Graham Thomas) with a deep yet deliciously fresh lemon sherbet/summery floral perfume:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Marlorena Thank very much for the possible id. Whatever it is, it is still a very nice colour. I'm slightly happier knowing that it isn't another Bonica seeing as I have 3 already.
@zugenie ..thanks for all the really good photos, and glad you had a nice day out.. the River Test is beautiful in that area too.. .. stand out roses 'Amadis'.. 'Constance Spry' and 'Souvenir du Dr. Jamain'..Ā from what I could tell..Ā Hope you enjoyed tea and cake too..Ā
@Woodgreen Yes it's attached to a 7ft trellis but likes to grow 2-3ft higher, so the unsupported higher bits tend to hang over slightly, which can be rather nice.
Thank you @peteS. I'm glad I asked, as I'd thought it was smaller than that for some reason. It looks really good in your photo. Thanks.
Edited to add, I may have muddled up Open Arms and The Simple Life, which I saw on a Sarah Raven short video. Sadly, scent isn't mentioned for The Simple Life.Ā Does anyone grow it by any chance? It sounds as though it may need some support from what I've read.
