..very early and rather unfair to be reviewing a new Austin, but I'll do it anyway..
A comparison between 'Bring Me Sunshine' and 'Golden Beauty'.. 'BMS' has gracefully arching canes, typical english rose shrub habit, clusters on the ends.. Strongly scented at first, with deep colours but both scent and colour quickly fade, then the rather thorny shrub becomes really, just another yellow.. Likely to be more attractive over time with the combined yellow effect more prominent. I'm not sure I'll wait to find out but I should..Â
'GB' has richer colours which hold longer, not much scent and an ungraceful plant with long angular canes with clusters on the ends.. very healthy.. it keeps waving at me as if to say ''can I stay longer please?''..
I use a long stick to bash the high trusses of GdeF about a bit to remove the spent petals.
Seedling 1 is making me happy, the colour is great and the habit/growth so far so good, bloom form is a little lacking but the scent is gorgeous. First Herzogin ChristianaClimbers are the highlights in the garden at the moment, amongst others Strawberry Hill, Claire Austin and Blush NoisetteSt Boniface and Bathsheba flanking a 7ft delphinium. You can also just see Royal William and Velvet Fragrance
As you just mentioned both BMS and GB Marlorena and I had just taken a picture of mine together (GB behind) I thought I'd share. BMS is underwhelming so far but I will give it time. Your comments are spot on for both but in addition my BMS is mildewy. I prefer GB Excuse my finger clumsiness.
And an edit while I'm here to show Kew gardens really thriving since I planted it 2 weeks ago, it too was mildew affected. My obliging husband removed a big shrub to free up this space.
You all had wonderful roses, thanks for the photos everyone, it’s a joy for the eyes to come and look at this thread!
Thank you @WhereAreMySecateurs mine is in a too shady spot and I will move her as soon as possible, hoping it’s not too late for her to recover.
@Nollie a beautiful white rose that doesn’t fear anything is Desprez a Fleur Jaune. No argids (and I have roses totally defoliated her but not her), no BS, no mildew, very disease resistant. She doesn’t care if it rains or there’s a bleaching sun, their blooms remain wonderful for days and she takes care of them all by herself, you don’t even need deadheading her.
The downside is that she has a slow growing habit for the first years, she takes at least 3 years to start growing well. But she will bloom just from the start.
Edit to add a couple of photos I just take:
She has many buds even in this heat (36 C) the only thing I miss is the rose hue that she loses if the weather is too ho hot
Im a bit behind but lots of lovely pics! Heats awful here, 30 degrees in garden so blooms not lasting as long and im too hot! A wrong order, 95th Celebration by harkness. Very elegant though. Harry Wheatcroft/ carribia Fabulous just opening! Westerland Lavender Ice I think this is papagena /oranges and lemons... its definatley not the Abracadabra it should be! Ive got the correct one now too. Lady Emma Hamilton. Shes lovely. Bring me sunshine... not this toned in person its pale yellow
Regarding Bring Me Sunshine, I emailed David Austin and basically got a flubbed off response, so I raised it via PayPal and lo and behold, a proper reply. I thought others might find this useful.Â
Thank you for getting in touch. I was very sorry to hear you had been disappointed with the colour of your Bring me Sunshine photographed however this recent flush seem to be quite a bit more yellow than we would expect. The colour of a bloom can vary in differing weather conditions so we have put this down to the weather at the time of the buds forming. We are confident later flowers will be more apricot as photographed so we would ask you to wait for the second flush. If it is still very yellow then we will be happy to refund or replace with something else.
Good for you, Omori. I am now quite relieved BMS had gone out of stock both times I went to order it, and won't be ordering any brand new DAs till the reviews start coming in unless it's, like, a floribunda blue rose that smells of coffee and Benedict Cumberbatch.
