'Velvet Fragrance' looks a terrific red actually, and by all accounts.. I think if I was in the market for such a rose it must rank high on the list.. I gather it doesn't like very high temps.. Here's what breeder Fryer said about it, in their interests of course.. ''Surely the darkest and most fragrant red rose yet, winner of the Edland Medal for fragrance. Rich, dark velvety crimson, the flowers are large, heavily petalled and beautifully formed with a sensational and almost overwhelming perfume. The blooms are carried in abundance. Growth is wonderfully robust and healthy growing and flowering lavishly all season.''
My red rose blooming in this blistering heat.. 'Marie Nabonnand'.. 'own root', with some Lythrum.. I admit to watering this rose a few days ago.. 'Dee-Lish'.. ..showing some crisping in the 91F heat.. The thermometer is just behind it..
I agree about Omori's photographs, just gorgeous. I too have Velvet Fragrance but it is in its second season and is still not robust. I think I got 2 blooms last year, haf a dozen so far this year.I had a brief wander this morning and took lots of pics before the roses spoil, some more reddish ones; MidsmmerND, Wild Rover, Grafin Diana and Jingle BellsGruss an Aachen is a real chameleon; cream in May to pink today and have had everything in between.
How is everyone getting on with the heat/water situation?
I ran out of butt water a fortnight ago and have started saving water by putting a trug with me in the shower (which is collecting loads of water that I must normally waste) and from the washing machine which is disappointingly environmentally friendly and doesn't seem to use much at all. Some of my roses have put on a considerable amount of new growth over the last few weeks. I did feed them before I ran out of water but I wondered if it was the heat they liked also. Some of my perennials are suffering, those I split/moved over winter and an established buddlea is completed wilted but I simply don't have the water to put on it. The pond is two thirds down but there are no fish in it.
Chateau de Munsbach, flowers are discolouring with pink now but it makes it easier to photograph without the white glare. Second batch of buds in progress at the back. I've been struggling to photograph this until it threw up a new cane, Highgrove. It has been bemildewed this year but so have many things. That drainpipe goes directly onto its feet but only when it rains so not helping much A mace-like new cane from Hot Chocolate. I'm not sure this photo does justice to in fact how brutal it is. Front garden, summer phase. I think Highgrove will look well there at the back when it fills its corner.
My another ‘The Prince’ has opened today and I think this is the correct one.
I have started feeling the pressure of garden maintenance and feel the weeds are constantly growing. Seriously I am not sure whether I am capable of managing all garden chores and roses. There is not much rain since we have installed rain water butts. I just wonder how you guys pour water to roses? Do you collect water in the can and pour it individually? I admit this is really a hectic job and so far I’ve never managed to pour water at one go. It takes atleast 3 hours plus to water one side which has 50+ roses and I try to cover the other side next day.
@Marlorena would you please give us your surviving list of 30 roses ? Wishing you a speedy recovery. Many Thanks.
Most of the rose blooms, including the second flush of DAs which just started last week, have crisped in the heat, either at the edges or in some cases, the entire flowers. Rather than sharing photos of those roses, I prepared a collage of the nicer ones. 😇 The buddleia is swarming with 🦋. Pardon my amateur photography.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
