Thanks @Eustace, I think I got lucky with selecting some hard working roses for the front.

@Rojas, my preferred watering method is to let a large trug constantly fill and then I go back and forth with a tub which I fill by dunking into the trug. It means I don't have to waste time waiting for it to fill and if I time the flow right I don't waste any water. It is still time consuming though and I sometimes split the garden into three watering sessions. I think others on here have more efficient methods using ready laid out and soaker hoses.

@Rojas @Victoria Sponge I used to use the watering can when I had a few potted roses in the front. I have to carry water through the hallway as the outside tap is in the back. This year, I have a 50m non-kink lightweight hose, brand armadillo, which has eased the pain quite a lot. I water only once a week during the weekend, that too only in the summer. This year has been quite bad with no significant rain since April. Rest of the week the plants have to survive with the water from a small terracotta pot which are placed in every pot. HTH.
