The one consolation was that I hadn't bother to insure him for medical cover for a couple of years and put the quoted premiums into a savings account instead. A year's premium would have been nearly £300 due to his age and wouldn't actually have covered any of his treatment or euthanasia but the savings account still has a bit of money in it at the end of it all. Not a gamble I recommend but insurance for everything has gone through the roof now.

@wild edges , you say it's not a gamble you would recommend but I'm not so sure. You have to weigh up what it's for but a lot of those insurances are not worth having. We never had insurance for our old family cat, hardly ever need the vet either. You can pay in for years only to find when you need it they find a way to wriggle out of it.  But I'm really thinking of things like extended warranty on domestic appliances etc. Decades ago when I was first married,  we were buying a TV,we asked in the shop about extra guarantee,  , luckily for us the chap in the shop said if you're really worried save  a fiver a month in a tin on top it  by the time you need it you'll want a new one and you'll  have most of the money you need. He was right.

That's our approach to extended guarantees, pet insurance and suchlike. The only exceptions are the central heating and the washing machine which we have under maintenance contracts because if one of those breaks down I want it fixed ASAP and not be hunting around for a repair person or to replace it. The boiler failed the week before last and was fixed the next day.

I know people whose pets have needed thousands of pounds of vet care and insurance has been a lifesaver, I've also known others in the same situation who have found that their insurance didn't actually cover much of it. I think a lot of pets need at least 3rd party cover though just in case.

@wild edges, my son has been in that situation a couple of times since they got their dog and they were very glad of the insurance then.

Condolences on the loss of your pet. Hope the boys aren't too upset.

When my insurance for two cats increased to £2700 pa for two cats I decided to relinquish it. They were too old to insure with anyone else. Then about a year later the older cat got a mouth tumour that needed radiotherapy at the Cambridge University Veterinary Hospital. The treatment was very expensive, multiple thousands, but did shrink the tumour. Unfortunately the abscess never healed and we had to have him euthanised. With the pet come responsibilities. Sorry to learn about your dog Wild Edges.

I know I bang on about AI - and this IS a globally political post (@waterbut) but I watched that Storyville BBC prog on AI and deep fake last night.
...ok, it has a titillating title, but the story was insane and the power to destroy people's lives needs to be curbed. Governments have got to speed up to keep up with change and start to realise what the world is facing (pun intended). This is just one aspect of the changes that will hit everyone's lives.

My niece has a dog which is in good health but she has said she will never have another one, in part because of the cost of insurance.

I'm curious about the reshuffle that would happen if the King abdicates. With William as King does that mean we end up with a bunch of children as the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cornwall or does Charles go back into that role? I assume Harry still gets left out in the cold.
I'm jumping the gun. My dad had cancer treatment at the same age and went back to work but he isn't a King sadly.
