@Lizzie27 if you think what you are being offered is bad, take a look at Norton Utilities.  You can buy a new version for about 1/4 of what they want for renewal.  I'm going to stop buying anti-virus because a number of people have said the same as Kili.  I never auto-renewed, just bought a new copy and entered the licence number.

I'm still on Windows 7, have never installed antivirus and never had a problem

Windows 7 has a  built in antiviral program (Microsoft Security Essentials) like Windows 10/11 but updates for it were stopped 14/01/2020. Unfortunately you wouldn't know if you've had a problem if the antiviral program has not been updated it cant detect malicious programs that were created after 14/01/2020. You could well have an infected machine but nothings triggered the hidden programs yet. Don't do your banking on that machine if I were you. You could of course be lucky and virus free.

You can just download the Windows 10 update tool to a windows 7 machine. As long as it has a legitimate licence it will do a free update to your machine to windows 10. If you are going to do this I would recommend that you install an SSD drive first if its an old machine else it will run like a sloth.

My Dell desktop is a 2012 machine with an upgraded SSD drive and it runs like a new Dell.

@floralies what make and model of laptop do you and @Hostafan1 have? I can research it and see what the issue is.

@Kili it's an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC, windows 7 Home Premium. That's very kind of you.

Would need to know the actual model no. DV6 is the range and within that range there are various models ie. dv6-3182ea , dv6-6033cl  etc.... Each model in the range would have different CPU and ram size configurations.

When will I learn? Got tempted by a bottle of alcohol free wine in the supermarket. Not as bad as some of the lemonade tasting things I’ve tried in the past, but it smells and tastes like retsina. Enough to drive me back to the hard stuff.
