I’m in the same position too with an £800 surplus with Scottish Power. The thing is, if I withdrew it and put it into a savings account I’d earn £1.60 a month in interest. By the time the tulips are in bloom we would have earned enough to have a coffee each in the Falcon in Uppingham. If we wanted a slice of cake as well we’d have to wait until the runner beans need harvesting. I can’t say I’m particularly bothered.

@BenCotto, what you say is fine, if you have money, sadly many people cannot affored their bills, so it makes a massive difference.

It isn't the lack of interest when keeping your own money in a bank account. It isn't even whether it's two hundred quid or ten thousand.
    It's the principle.

Well, we don't have to make monthly payments by direct debit ... we could keep the money in our accounts (presuming we've got some money of course) and then pay the bills.

Very few companies allow that though.

You can do it ... but usually not on the lowest tariff ... as with most things, you have to weigh things up and make a choice ... we're happy to pay monthly by DD ... we're well in credit so, whilst being as economical as we can we don't worry too much about the payments.  If we've accrued too much by the end of the winter we'll claim some of it back.

The people I really feel for are those on pre-payment meters through no choice of their own ... they were already paying an inflated price before the recent price hikes.

@Fairygirl I'm so used to DD being used for 'Dear Daughter', although I don't understand why people can't just type the word 'daughter', that I thought your offspring had increased their charge for visiting. :D

I'd never use DD for dear daughter @KT53 :D
I was reading yesterday about a woman who was over two grand in credit, yet the company put her DDs up. That's not acceptable in anyone's book. She had a helluva job getting that sorted because they wouldn't communicate with her.
I've been with SO before and they do a 6 month solution - lower for summer months, and higher in winter. That was quite good. I should have stayed with them. That's what I get for being prudent and trying to lower my bills.  :/

I've also been on a pre payment meter in the past when I had to live in a refuge for a couple of months. Fortunately, I was working, but that's a total disgrace, and it's a forgotten, ignored, hidden community.

Our current gas usage is still very low, but the cost is rising at a huge rate, and the standing charges are now rocketing, and all these companies are still baling out the failed ones. What that really means is -  other customers are bailing them out.

With our electricity bill, we don't pay monthly, the company just helps themselves when the bill is due. We get a couple of week's warning beforehand. They can't hold onto credit. It works fine so long as you can pay the bill.
Gas is monthly and we were about £50 behind last bill so I'm sure there'll be a huge hike soon😒

@Fairygirl I understand why gas and electricity prices are increasing, but why are the standing charges also rocketing?  Their costs in administrating the systems are increasing massively.  Just another easy way to rip off people.
