  • @raisingirl I get your drift but what made me think was the fact that the 3 dogs next door as well as the singles/pairs up and down the road ( various types/ages/sizes ) all howled when the bells began today ( and also the day last week - announcement of the Q's death ).  I live just a couple of yards from the church so it did seem very obvious.
Despite the fact that it is a very busy road ( due to the proximity of Hinkley C ), I've never heard them howling at either the police or ambulance sirens, the practice warning sirens from the power station, or the constant car alarms going off.  Enough people stop outside the Church to use their mobile phone so various ring tones but no howling dogs.
Not really important but jut made me wonder what it was about the tone that set them off  :)

    I'm sure there's a logic in a dog's mind but I can't figure it out
I had a spaniel that would howl along to MC Hammer and Ruby by the Kieser Chiefs. His brain was run by a particularly squeaky hamster wheel though.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I knew a Collie/Alsatian cross who used to howl/sing to the theme tune of Neighbours.   Never howled when we looked after her cos we didn't watch Neighbours and nothing else seemed to set her off.

Every now and then I find something being sold that I cannot understand. Today's example is these two sticks on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1229432857/2x-black-elder-sticks-58-cm-23-nche-long?click_key=0c28cd33d02c16d955246b810f6a8ca3bf965b48%3A1229432857&click_sum=54bb8d21&ref=shop_home_active_2&pro=1&frs=1  If I could sell my prunings for £15 a stick I think I could probably retire. £15 for a stick? Are they selling them to rich dogs? I can picture someone buying them for their astroturf-covered garden just to add that natural look.

  • Ah, but you see, you ‘add value’ by cutting them up and tying them together in a bundle with twine so they can be bought on Etsy by people too daft even to have thought of doing that themselves … remember, the word ‘crafty’ has two meanings 🙄

I reckon every year I prune enough unsprayed and unfertilised (so I suppose they're organic) bay leaves to make a fortune at supermarket prices.

@wild edges - perhaps they're intended for wand-making as in Harry Potter and the Elder wand which is one of the Deathly Hallows!!

I pruned the elder the other day. Unfortunately, I cut  the stems into 4" pieces to get them all in the council bin. How foolish!
