Allotment Boy's comment about phone signal is interesting as it's not good at this GC either. Even if they do want to run 'card only' on a day to day basis, it is extremely poor planning not to have a backup process available to cover just such an eventuality.
I have a cheque book in my handbag. A cheque with my address on the back (and sometimes with my card number on the back as well) has been acceptable to most places when their card machine connection had been down.
It’s not just the shops that can have backup.

I've got one cheque in a cheque book somewhere😐 The thing is..... Have any of you ever bought something in a garden centre that you genuinely couldn't do without? Internet down. can't use cards. Money in the bank.
I always have my debit card and a cheque book with me but rarely have cash unless I'm going to a flea market. Regular market traders take cards these days. The cheque book feels like an anachronism as the Belgians got rid of them about 25 years ago but the French still use them and actively prefer them for things like club subscriptions.

I never go anywhere without cash, even if I'm expecting to pay by card. I've known card machines and cards to fail but cash will generally get you out of those problems. The obvious exceptions being those places who will not take cash.

Generally true, but the GC I referred to which takes card only has a large restaurant which is always very busy, particularly at lunchtimes. They must have taken a massive financial hit on Sunday.
In our suburb, over the years, we had 3 building societies in a row. Then it was 2. Next the remaining 1 turned into a bank which is now shut. Latest twist planning permission has been sought for a block of flats on the site.
