Very interesting @wild edges there used to be loads of Green Tiger beetles on Thorne and Hatfield Moors, ridiculously fast creatures the adults.

  • I have seen seen loads of these “small brown jobs” (Gatekeeper??) this year but It’s the first time I’ve seen some mating.

That's funny @wild edges - wasn't there a Winnie the Pooh story where he got stuck in a hole like that?  😄

I'm surprised to see a lot of bumbles about today; I thought it would be too hot for them.

Looking out over the valley last night it seemed like there was smoke drifting up on the wind but it didn't look quite right. Through the binoculars though you could see it was swarms of insects caught in the sunlight. They were passing through for well over an hour so there must have been millions of them. It doesn't look so impressive in a photo sadly.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Hopefully this will have been a good year for insect life in the UK

Just had a Hummingbird Hawkmoth on the Buddleia briefly. First for a while. What next?

Looking rather like a British patriot moth there - somewhat resembling a British Airways 747.
  • I have had lots of Holly Blues in my garden today, mostly on Helenium and Veronicastrum.
