I found this dude in the garden today, Google tells me it's a Roesel's bush-cricket? Usually wingless but rare winged ones exist - pretty sure this one has wings.
That's a bit of a special fine, @Crazybeelady! Thanks for showing us.
I came across this very sorry butterfly, it sort of sums up the weather this year. The winds have barely stopped and butterflies have had to come out regardless.
I think it's a painted lady, but the paint's got a bit washed out.
At least you've seen a painted lady this year @NormandyLiz! I haven't. I saw a gatekeeper yesterday and it was a miracle it was still flying, its wings had loads of chunks missing. I went for the camera but I was too late!
Very pleased for you, @SalixGold! They are so special.
That's a red admiral, @davwensum. I know a lot of people don't like buddleia but for me they are worth it for the butterflies they attract.
And on our buddleia today was this gem:
which I believe is a male silver-washed fritillary. I'll confess I'd not even heard of it before, never mind seen one. I assume it's come from the forest, which is just over the road.
Lucky you @NormandyLiz! I never see any rarities where I am. I've had a couple of hummingbird hawk-moth visits this year, not as many as last year, I guess they enjoyed the heat more than I did!
