    What a useful link @Obelixx.  I started growing some clematis last year, including Octopus, like you @Fairygirl.  None of them put up much of a display last year, except for Polish Spirit which I now see needs a hard prune asap!
    Gardening in East Suffolk on dry sandy soil.

    Polish Spirit is a nice easy variety @didyw :)
    The smaller, early ones are quite different in habit and requirements though. All clems need a few years to settle in and mature. 

    Unfortunately, many of those evergreen/winter ones [like Freckles etc] often don't do well up here either. Maybe in town gardens, or very sheltered spots, but they don't like more rural, or exposed, gardens and conditions, especially our wet cold stuff. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
