Clematis

Don't forget, next Monday, 14th. February, is the most important day of the clematis year. Time to prune your Group 3 clematis ( a group of clematarians want to scrap the Group 1, 2, 3 system but not me ). Butcher them back, almost to the floor, just hoping that you have planted them with the crowns a few inches below ground level. This is where the Saint Valentines Day Massacre got its name from.

Great to hear from you Richard! It's been quite a while...

Thanks for the reminder. Did mine well early this year though, several weeks ago in fact. Only because I noticed how much new growth there was already on my C. viticella 'Mme. Julia Correvon'. Took cuttings from the off-cuts this time though so I may be over-run with them soon ;)

    Nice joke @Richard Hodson ;)

I'll have to wait and see what the weather does, but I had to cut one Group 3 back a little while ago. I'm not sure it was very happy anyway, so whether it recovers well or not is another matter.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I thought it was because Hosta lovers often apply a small sprinkling of pellets  on that day  to catch emerging slugs and snails before they start breeding?

Thanks for the reminder, @Richard Hodson :) I've had a look at my clematis and they are already showing buds on the old stems. Time to get those sécateurs out!

Many thanks Richard, good to hear from you. I've had to do one or two Group 3's already but will do the rest soon.

Afraid to start poking around just yet, but they're still upright, green & alive. I've kept them under glass to give them a better chance.
