  • @Richard Hodson many thanks for the info. Could you go a bit further and remind me which group three is. I have Princess Diana small little bells. and the big flowers that appear in July. Thank you, Valerie
The pruning Group 3 clematis flower on new wood and are Summer flowering. your Princess Diana is a Texensis Group cultivar ( texensis species originates from Texas )and should be pruned hard every year about now. New shoots then emerge from the crown of the plant which will later in the year produce flowers. Also in Group 3 are the Viticella, Viorna Groups, most of the herbaceous forms and lots of species

This is a useful site for checking the pruning group @valerieroberts, if you forget . All you need is the name of the clematis  :)

I remember buying Clematis Princess Kate and saying to the nurseryman.
" I'm buying this despite the name, not because of it . Just so long as she's as pretty as her Mother in Law "
    She's not.

Oh joy. I've checked my clematis, all 5 of them, and purely by chance they are all group 3 so can be pruned at the same time about now. I'll get the hang of it yet.

I thought I'd killed my Princess Diana in the drought last year but she recovered - which I'm sure the daily express would be pleased to hear 😉

Can anyone id this clematis please? The only clue I have is the old label. The pic is ok but the instructions and name on the back are too worn away to read. It looks like an Alpina variety. I know next to nothing about clematis as I've said before but I'm learning  :)
