In my gardening life, I've never bothered with clematis because they have seemed too complicated, different ones needing to be cut back at different times. However, last year I bought 3 and I think with the guidance of this thread I might just make a go of growing them so thanks for the inspiration folks.

I'm really annoyed with myself because I think I killed my montana 'Freda' :'(            I applied SBK brushwood killer to an ivy stump nearby and can only assume it got into the Clematis root system. I applied the SBK by drilling holes in the ivy stump and carefully brushing the solution into the holes. None went directly onto the Clematis but within a couple of months all its foliage had died. I'm just really hoping some new growth comes from below this year.

Great you're back @Richard Hodson.  I had to move two I bought from you a few years ago into larger pots and did it in November, cutting them back. I know I should have waited but for various reasons didn't. The "Kaiu" isn't looking too happy and I'm a little worried about it.  I had noticed previously it was one of the slower ones to show new shoots.  Am I worrying unnecessarily?  :| Every day I look at it for new shoots.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

Kaiu is very hardy and if you have potted it on into a larger pot that is good, plenty of water is essential and it will soon send up new 2022 growth. My stock of Kaiu in the greenhouses are not breaking surface yet. Once it gets going it is very vigorous.

I don't think my slugs ever slowed down. They enjoy an active sex life year round, it seems; swinging from the chandeliers.

I have already hacked my type clematis back, but I do leave some longer stems uncut at the base to encourage them to grow further along the fence.

@Richard Hodson sold me a couple of Clematis 'Alba Luxurians' last year, I'm really looking forward to seeing how they perform this year.

oooo, a white viticella. I missed that one.  I'd prefer to find one similar to this that is a group one, not a group three. But it might have to do. I read that there are some small montanas out there, but they seem fairly impossible to source.
  • @Richard Hodson many thanks for the info. Could you go a bit further and remind me which group three is. I have Princess Diana small little bells. and the big flowers that appear in July. Thank you, Valerie
