Would have been my Mums 95th. birthday today, so have been recalling lots of happy memories.
Nephew was supposed to visit today, he is moving from Colchester back home to Edinburgh and we would have been a perfect stopping point. Spoke to him an hour ago, still in Colchester, that's the young for you.

  • That's a nice way to spend your mum's birthday @punkdoc, well not the nephew not turning up, but having lived until 95 there must be lots of very happy memories and although obviously a sense of loss, certainly a good innings as it were.

@janetfoss and @Penny_Forthem and all other 'newbies' although I absolutely understand your 'shyness' , joining in a forum thread such as this can certainly feel a bit like joining a private conversation at times, but we all know it is open for anyone to see and I for one love to see new faces and more and more contributors. It makes it so much more interesting, prevents any feel of cliquiness and as far as I am concerned just more 'friends'.

I think we all enjoy reading each others daily trials, tribulations and the fun stuff that goes on and I definitely appreciate the wonderful support/advice and sometimes just a kick up the bum when I am feeling down.

Off to post some pictures of my snowdrops and hellebores now, albeit they are a bit battered, wet and soggy, Really enjoyed the walk around the garden, despite the soggyness. I am afraid I ignored the paperwork and had another lazy day..... I might get used to that.  :)

Hi folks, it's calmed down here after strong winds overnight - the lull before the storm. My arbour was blown over again but our very kind neighbour has now laid it flat on the front lawn in anticipation of Eunice later tonight. It has a solid roof and so it's top heavy, may have to think of taking it off and substituting a trellis roof. One of the bracing supports was also rotten. My poor Claire Austin rose was the only thing holding the arbour up so had to disentangle it. I'm surprised it wasn't yanked out of the ground.

We're expecting a surprise visit from my son and his very big dog tonight - just hoping he makes it before the storm hits. They'll have to sleep in the same room as the dog hasn't been here before. Expecting a rather sleepless night between the storm and a disorientated dog! Hope he doesn't bark - it's a tremendous noise.

I've cancelled my visit to my daughter in Devon, she rang this morning and forbade me to travel. Re-arranged for early March hopefully.

Hope everyone stays safe tonight, especially those of us in the West Country. I've got candles, torches and thermos flasks at the ready!

  • I’ve bumped up the
Are you Awake? thread so folk who think they may be awake because of the storm tonight can bookmark it, and then share mugs of cocoa and biscuits with others who are kept awake tonight

  • Thanks for the reassurances. I hope others who maybe feel a bit hesitant to join in will have a go too.
@Dovefromabove that's a lovely idea. I'm often awake for several hours in the night, so now I know there'll be refreshments and company, I won't feel so alone.

    Evening all.

Everyone in a flap this afternoon as schools are shut tomorrow and even the health board have txt us all to say work from home if possible (not possible for anyone clinical of course).

I’ve moved some pots and a few bits in the garden but we have plenty of trees around us. I’ve checked the older family members are ok and instructed keep their phones charged and have a plan for no power etc (Dad has stairlift).

In better news, the stew made yesterday is warming up for tonight’s meal.

    Take care all.

Just reading the local news’paper’… they have closed schools, trains, buses, parks, courts (?) and the vaccination centres. Oh, and Prince Charles has postponed his visit to South Wales (one visit was to our local hospice).

I've reinforced some repaired bits on the polytunnel.
    Worzle is home.
Feeling bad about not seeing Hubby tomorrow but I know when I'm beaten.

  • @Hostafan1, you have to look at it another way; miss one day and get to go all the other days after, a freak accident tomorrow and there could be no more visits, how distraught would he be then? You are just being very sensible. i know someone else asked, but is he not able to follow a phone conversation? I suppose the staff are too busy to deal with that. Hugs to you both though. And looks like there's going to be a party on the Are you awake thread? Might take your mind off things. ;)

I've told him I'll call, but he may well have forgotten that already. I'll call around 8.30am when he's due his medication , just to make sure he's not being stubborn and refusing it.
Thank you all for your continuing kindness. I'm genuinely touched and humbled by it.
