Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Had to look up fagiano. Thought it would be some fancy Italian dessert that I wouldn't fancy.
I find Giles Coren's reviews amusing. All part of my interest in food porn. I read about restaurants I'd never visit and drool over recipes for food I'd never cook.

Have to admit this did make me laugh.
"Starters take an age to follow, with the waiters giving unrequested updates. Unfortunately, they do eventually arrive."

I'm trying to remember that this is someone's livelihood, but it does remind me of the Harry Enfield sketch.

I love eating out and yes it can be expensive, but it's my money and I shall spend it as I choose.

I'm certainly not suggesting you shouldn't have the freedom to spend your money in any way you wish.  I enjoy good food as much as anybody, but I won't pay what I think are excessive amounts.  "Excessive" is very much a personal choice.
The best meal I ever had was free.  My wife worked with a lady who's husband was a senior chef with Cunard, and we were invited round for what was simply described as 'Something special' one evening.  Main recollections are what I referred to as 'No teeth steak' it was so tender and beautifully cooked, and a fabulous sweet.

There are some restaurants that reliably produce food of extremely high quality and it’s worth paying quite a lot for that, if you want to.
I’ve eaten at a few of them, back in the day … thoroughly enjoyed myself and learned a bit too.

The problem is the so-so restaurants that ride on the coat-tails of the really good ones; they serve up mediocre food, provide poor service, and charge the same as the really good ones.  They are kept afloat by the custom of folk who don’t know or don’t care that the food is mediocre, they just want it known that they can afford it.
