Water back on this morning. It went off late afternoon yesterday, and was still off at midnight/1pm. Those chaps spent the rest of their Christmas Day and through the night in pouring rain, sleet and sub zero temps fixing it. I take my hat off to them.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

There was an item on BBC Breakfast today with a team trying to trace and fix a leak. It's not just a case of digging down to uncover the pipe and then repair it. In this instance they had to get under sewers, gas pipes, and various other utilities just to access the pipe. Then they have to find the actual leak point, equipment on the surface can only provide the general area. Only then can they set about doing the work on the leak, whilst still trying to protect the other services.
The water board had been working on a long section of our main road here from early July until quite recently. A hellish job - and the weather wasn't particularly pleasant a lot of the time. It's only a 2 lane road, so it often had to be completely closed. As someone who worked outdoors all year round for over twenty years. I know how unpleasant it can be. A couple of the blokes were very cheery and we had a quick chat on many days when I was out for my walk. Mainly discussing the idiots who ignored every sign about the road being closed, but that didn't stop them driving on regardless....

They need to get one of the artists out who create the optical illusion pavement art with chalk. A big hole drawn just after the roadworks would at least scare the carp out of the idiots
I bought a rare bottle of port for my OH's Xmas at least 10 years ago. We never got round to drinking it and put it away in a wine rack. I noticed it was leaking slightly from the cork a few years ago and thought that it would be vinegar now. I took it out of the rack and stood it upright then forgot about it until I found it again this year. Out of curiosity I opened it on Xmas day, trying to get out most of the disintegrating cork but some broke off so I filtered it. It looked good, the colour of Oloroso sherry, and smelt fine so we tasted it. It was exquisite, nectar of the Gods and a 62 year old treat courtesy of British Rail!
I don't know where it came from originally but it might have been in the boardroom wine cellars when the BR St Pancras Chambers offices closed decades ago and this bottle ended up in a local wine cellar which was then bought by our local wine merchant.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
