Wild turkeys living in Berkeley, California, where daughter is currently staying. They can often be seen wandering around town, including using the pedestrian crossings, local drivers are apparently very tolerant!
Might seem odd that someone dying is a reason to be cheerful, especially a youngster, but Doddie Weir, 6 foot 7 of glorious chaos, a rampaging giraffe, has died of MND. The man was a glorious rugby player and raised millions for charity. Also Kevin Sinfield a rugby legend in this part of the world, has been raising millions for his pal Rob Burrows, another rugby man dying of MND. Overused words, but these men were/are true heroes and legends.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
My best friend died at 42 from an illness which slowly destroyed all his physical ability but not the mind. It wasn't MND but the effect was much the same. At his funeral his uncle said that he was "Sad but not sorry" and I think that is a very good description of the feelings at the time. My friend had absolutely no quality of life and had made it clear he didn't want to be resuscitated. We were all sad to lose a wonderful person, but not sorry that they weren't going through it any more. Hopefully Doddie's friends and family will feel the same.
I have a very good friend with MND. Over the past 12 years his faculties have diminished and he is now quadriplegic and can only communicate with eye movements operating his computer screen. But, aided by his phenomenal wife, he makes the most of every day and is truly inspirational.
Interesting that you posted the news about Doddie on this thread @punkdoc. I posted yesterday on the Curmudgeon thread, because I was angry. A little item from the news today about him https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-63772470
What made me angry and upset was, I'd just read an item about the criminal Charles Bronson, whining and full of self pity 'cos his appeal to get out for Christmas was turned down. Despicable piece of ****. No justice at all when someone like Doddie dies at 52 and that 'thing' is still alive. Sorry. I'm all wrong for this thread today.
Very sad about your friend @KT53. I can absolutely understand. When your mind still works but the rest of you doesn't, it takes a very special sort of person to cope with it. Your friend is clearly that sort of person @BenCotto. None of us can know how we would deal with it if we were in that position. I'm full of admiration for those who get through every day with hope, and also full of admiration for all those who help them do it. Staying positive isn't always easy for people to achieve. Those of us lucky enough to be fairly healthy need regular reminders of the hell many people deal with long term, so that we can thank our lucky stars every day.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
@Fairygirl, my friend died in 2000, and the technology wasn't available to provide him with any effective method of communicating. All he could do was try to mouth the words and for us to try to lip read. It was frustrating for us when we got things wrong, so I can only imagine what it must have been like for him. Everybody deals with terminal illness in different ways, and he battled for at least 10 years.
My nephew was a Scotland rugby international and he took me to a dinner at which Doddie spoke, shortly after getting the diagnosis. I have to admit I cried, and I cried again yesterday, when I heard the news. In this neck of the woods Kevin Sinfield has assumed legend status, and in Yorkshire very few achieve that.
