oh, I have those silicone ice trays and yes, they are a total game changer. I have ones of a decent size too - so no fiddling about with stupid little cubes.
Soft silicone is amazing stuff. I have a couple of these universal lids. They are great for saucepans or microwaves but happy in the oven and the fridge. They work well to cover salads or fruit in the summer and are fine for dishwashers. They don't create a tight seal on a sauce pan, for when you are cooking rice etc, but I don't find that a problem. I need fewer lids in the cupboard, because two or three fit all of my pans.
You can get cake 'tins' made in the same way. Silicone is much more durable than plastic, sourced mostly from sand. It doesn't break down into nanoparticles in the same way as plastics. Items made of it are more likely to be 'goods for life' - chosen carefully and handed on.
A kitchen thermometer. I had used them at work in commercial kitchens but never had one at home. Then I borrowed one from the mother in law when I needed to pluck ducks (the water needs to be at a pretty precise temperature) that was 7 years ago, I still have it. If ones not 100% sure about the roast one can check it rather than ending up with it overcooked.
And a small battery LED light that turns on when tapped, it lives in a kitchen cupboard whose door is hung so that it blocks the light from both the windows and the light fittings when it's open.
I just happened to see Pink Stuff when I was in the queue in The Range. I clean my jewellery in a pot of - this is the point where I went to the kitchen to read the label. Turns out it's called Connoisseurs Jewellery Cleaner. It's got a copyright from 1997 and it's made in USA. Presumably OH got it off the net. So much for trying to help. My OH is one for gadgets, starting with the breadmaker, deep fat fryer (for the home-made doughnuts), pineapple cutter which means it's thick or thin slices, bagel holder so you can cut without slicing your fingers off, pestle and morter for the fresh ginger to be crushed for making ginger-beer (what else!).
Trouble is, he gets an enthusiasm which then dies away. It's not immediate so we've a variety of loaves etc but even buying a pineapple was " maybe later ". Later never came. Possibly should be on Curmudgeons thread but I never thought I'd write so much.
Yes. It's good to know the gadgets that are unexpectedly and genuinely great and don't live in the back of the cupboard but turn out to be game changers.
Thank you Fire for your post about silicon lids - one of our gadgets: Mr D's Thermal Cooker, is out of commission because we broke the lid, and a silicon lid will likely be a perfect replacement...
Thanks for the link @StephenSouthwest. They aren't cheap are they! Not bad in the sale prices. If the one I've ordered doesn't come through [delivery delays] I might get one.
I meant to order some of those silicone doofers when they were mentioned ages ago, so that was handy they were brought up here. I ordered some yesterday. I don't like the silicone baking trays/tins though. I find they just collapse. I got some loaf tins years ago because my metal ones were knackered, and I wasn't impressed. I've got one that's more sturdy, but it's an odd size. Daughter got a tray for doing some Swiss roll sponges, and it wasn't great either.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Worst when it's something like a tea loaf because it's a wetter mix than a sponge.
