I guess there's a fat, happy mouse somewhere. One ate our Christmas pudding one year (he got through the foil 'lid') and also one ate his way into a cardboard 'tin' of cocoa powder - THAT made a mess. I assume his mate had words with him about the state he was in when he got back to his nest.
Shouldn’t speak too soon, but so glad we no longer have a mouse problem since OH finally blocked up all the gaps round the skirting boards. No longer have any cats either, but I still remember hearing a crash from the kitchen one Christmas morning, and finding the roasting tin on the floor, and Tom trying to drag the raw turkey out through the cat flap!
Mice are known for their fondness for cheese @punkdoc. We too live in an old house and our kitchen extension was built over the drainage system. Which meant not just mice but rats could get in. Our solution was to have the kitchen demolished and a new one built! Nothing can get in there now!
The general licences are a joke but in theory those game keepers still need to prove they've exhausted all non-lethal methods of control before resorting to killing birds. With no one to check though and blind eyes turned wherever possible the wording is fairly meaningless. They've been killing protected birds as well for many years and rarely get more than a slap on the wrist.
It's amazing how quickly that mild weather turned to snow. A week ago it would have been most welcome but not so much on the first day back to work
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Typical delivery from Herpes last night - parcel small enough to go through the letter box just dumped by the rubbish bin at the bottom of the drive. They even had the cheek to photograph it and say it was "delivered successfully".

Huh! That company is useless where I live. They lost 2 parcels of mine from M&S last year both worth nearly £100. Of course, M&S resent the parcels. I often wonder who pays for the non delivery, M&S or the delivery company.
I ordered something from the NT, email from Royal Mail. Your parcel will be delivered Tuesday 4th Jan, he’s been, no parcel!
Happens all the time here. You'll likely get another email shortly telling you it'll be delivered tomorrow instead (or the next day). The time to worry is when you get an email saying it's been delivered when it hasn't. That's when we have to start ringing round the neighbours to see if they have it. Usually Yodel rather than Royal Mail when that happens - RM are very good.
Our local Hermes man is good too - the company lose parcels from time to time, but once it gets to 'Ian', we know it'll arrive. It's all down to the individuals, as always

They're dire here as well. They must go through hundreds of drivers every few months. You're right @raisingirl - it comes down to the individuals. I hate to think how much must go missing, and not everyone bothers to report it etc. For a while we had a nice wee bloke, who was really good, and helpful. Not seen him for ages - he probably got fed up of the grief. The girl who's replaced him is bl**dy awful. I've reported her a couple of times, and I get the usual rubbish reply about how they'll address it [they don't] and how the behaviour is unacceptable [aye right] She still doesn't give a toss. Although 'toss' is an appropriate term for what she does do...

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I take it back. I'd much rather this cold, dry weather than more rain. We even had a couple of hours of glorious sunshine that dried the washing and aired out the house with all the windows opened up wide. The sun is still so low that it only made it to the top shelf of the one greenhouse though, where the most favoured succulents sit dreaming of the warmth of their native lands. I just hope we don't have snow into May like we did last year.
