Our toaster died at lunchtime. Possum was toasting brioche and it shorted out the whole house 3 times. Loosened bit of grilling wire touching the central support.  B*gger! But then Possum remembered her toaster is stashed in the Cave so we don't have to buy a new one - yet. Â
So they say @Obelixx,and our cafetiere fell off the drainer into the sink the other day when the washing machine was having a right good spin. That's another new thing ordered. I'm hoping that was the third thing though - the washing machine needed sorted a while agoÂ
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
@Uff We are indeed on a steep hill which is part of the problem. Our drive is a narrow dirt track which is soft when wet and there isn't enough room to turn most vans around. They try then get stuck with their wheels buried up to the axle in soft ground and their van buried in the hedge next to a 6 foot drop into our neighbour's house. That is when they burn out their clutch and tyres trying to dig themselves out.
Even when they try to reverse back down instead they mess it up - there is a right angle bend to negotiate which is very tricky on a steep hill. Vans are front wheel drive so when they get to the tricky bit all the weight is at the back of the van and they lose traction and control of the steering and brakes at the same time. Gravity then takes them sideways on to a steep bank at the side of the drive. A few have come very close to toppling over before we got them out.
The really annoying part is they are rarely trying to deliver to us! Some claim that their satnav says our drive is a road they can use to get to our uphill neighbours. It isn't and nothing short of a huge military tank could ever get up the bank to our neighbour's garden. Others just assume there is a turning circle which will save them doing a 7 point turn on the road. Most sensible people would take one look at our drive and say I'm not going up there!
We looked at a house to buy which had a drive much like yours @steephill, although that one was tarmac. It had an extremely tight right hand bend between two garage walls, steep zig-zag bends through a wood and no turning place at the top. We decided to be sensible and walked away.
Lent a friend a book to try and cheer her up and give her a laugh ( she suffers from depression ) - it was published in 2007 - it worked as she thoroughly enjoyed it but now wants to know what happened between then and 2012 when I first met her. I'm lucky if I can remember what day it is, never mind what I was doing years ago. Her suggestion ? Write another book to cover the gap !! Yeah, right  Not to be too curmudgeonly tho - much colder here but a beautifully sunny day - more like a "proper" January.
OH is trying to tell me 12th night is Thursday but, despite being a non-believer (so's he but he likes all the lights and baubles) I'm sticking with the C of E and Jan 5th.
@KT53 surely then in winter it's a sensible precaution to have gloves handy, just in case.
I was given a pair for Christmas. I just didn't realise how cold it was until we were out and about. It had been really mild the day before.
Today’s eye-rolling from me, headline criticising a film about Golda Meir, as Helen Mirren was cast as the lead despite not being Jewish. This comes soon after complaints about heterosexual actors playing homosexual or trans characters. Could this trend mean the end of films with characters who are murderers, rapists etc? Or will there be crowds of casting agents waiting outside prisons and probation offices to recruit for forthcoming films? And woe betide anyone hoping to play a superhero? I thought the whole premise of acting was to convincingly pretend to be someone or something you are not? Or have I been wrong all these years? Â
It was pointed out today that the Jewish actress who complained about Helen Mirren playing Golda Meir, played an Anglican vicar in the Vicar of Dibley. Double standards???
We've had to call out our farmer neighbour with his tractor on a few occasions to pull some muppet out of a ditch or hedge in our lane. It's most often because they are very reluctant to reverse and will try to turn when there very obviously isn't room to do so, and end up getting stuck sideways. Not helped by the really poor traction the long wheelbase transits seem to have - they slide all over the place. The SM delivery vans are the worst - we don't get our shopping delivered because the SM vans simply can't turn round, even though much bigger trucks with better tyres (Jewson deliveries) can manage it without a problem, and those things must be horrible to reverse any distance.
Some years ago a girl who worked with my wife had a great excuse for not being able to get to work. A gritter lorry had slid off the road, completely blocking the access from the farm she lived on.

These things go in threes don't they?
