I think the situation in Bristol and the circumstances leading up to that particular incident are actually quite specific and particularly egregious. It doesn't translate to other protests or other criminal damage incidents. I'm not surprised a Bristol jury acquitted them. The authorities were unwise trying to pursue it through this route - it was always a risk and they lost the gamble.
It's really not about 'obliterating history', it's about telling the truth and not idolising or celebrating people who deserve more censure than praise. You can't pretend it didn't happen and the BLM protestors don't want to do that.

IMHO the statue should have been moved to a museum a long time ago ,where the full story of the man could be displayed. No obliteration of history, simply the facts , but no adulation or celebration either. I think there are many actions taken by Winston Churchill which haven't exactly stood the test of time.
They’ve already defaced Churchill’s statues. As almost every type of trading was built on slave trade one way or another, I can’t see this ending very quickly now. I hope when they put the statues in museums and write the history they will include all the things they donated money too, schools hospitals etc.

Grant Shapps says that the Government agrees with the rule of law and will change the law when necessary to make sure that it best serves what politicians want. If we don't like it we should protest via the ballot box apparently. An oddly honest statement from a politician.
If only they were more willing to change the laws they made as quickly to stop politicians benefitting from lobbying and 'legal' bribery. People seem more worried about a few statues being illegally removed than democracy being legally eroded though.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
There were many attempts over the years to have the statue moved to a museum, or to have the wording of the plaque changed, in order to place it in a historical context, but a few powerful men kept blocking it … details on the link I posted.

What would be the view if there was a statue of Jimmy Savile standing somewhere ... 'after all, he raised a lot of money for charity' ...

Not all laws are moral … only the most despicable have ever overridden their own moral compass simply because the law allowed it.
