We missed the first episode of Shetland but thought we'd catch up.Ā  But still no idea what is going on.Ā  But it's still an enjoyable watch.Ā  (Was getting it mixed up with Murder Island for a while though!).Ā
I'm writing this a few pages back so hope by the time I have caught up your car has been fixed @Hostafan1.Ā  Mine wouldn't start yesterday so a friend had to come to the rescue to get my stuff up to the centre of town for the lights switch-on yesterday.Ā  SIL is charging the battery up now.Ā  Horrid car - demands to be driven 30 miles a week but I just don't have the time.Ā
What a dilemma for you @Allotment Boy.Ā  I hope you have managed to persuade your friend to get jabbed by the time the visit is over. Saw a heartbreaking item on the news the other day - someone who hadn't been vaccinated but caught Covid and was hospitalised struggling for breath and croaking to those not vaccinated to get jabbed.
@tui34 - hats off to you for making a start with the exercising.Ā  Wish I had the drive to do it.
@Nanny Beach - you can call it whatever you like!Ā  No-one is monitoring anyone else in what they call the forthcoming festivities.Ā  We celebrate Christmas as we always have done, with family.Ā Ā
@chicky - those windows are amazing!

We had our Christmas Lights Switch-On yesterday - so magical!Ā  I had a stall where people had to 'find the pudding' by putting a pin in a map of the town.Ā  We had 12 puds (some homemade) to find and I ended up by giving strong hints as to where they might be ("look for a church", "think about bridges" etc) as didn't want to have to take any home.Ā  Did you see it in the paper @Dovefromabovehttps://www.edp24.co.uk/things-to-do/bungay-lights-switch-on-november-19-8503400?fbclid=IwAR2Ucpj4C6Z4HO3HXR01vyUde8Msh5tbhZhXren6A8R3wafQSBsNAs4NyKw

Hello Forkers.Ā  Ā It's dull and grey and feels slightly damp as the mist has only recently lifted.Ā  I've only been outside to freshen up the bird food and go and give the chooks their thyme infused rice and check the polytunnel.Ā  Ā Seedlings and citrus plants doing fine.Ā  3 Savoys outside in the cabbage patch not so much.Ā  Bess has pecked them so they have a saucer shaped top.

Not reasonable to rename Xmas Winter festival as that only covers the northern hemisphere.Ā  Ā No axe to grind as we don't do religion but we do the family celebration thing and it happens at Xmas cos that's when people have time off work or studies and it's good to make the house look festive when it's dark and dreary outside and daylight is in short supply.Ā  Ā It did feel odd the year we were in Oz in early January and there were Xmas lights in palm trees.

Hope your lunch was good @Busy-Lizzie and that daughter 2 is managing to sort out her life OK.Ā  Love those windows @chicky.

We had a lovely lunch today. I had lamb shank and OH had Sea Bass, followed by warm homemade chocolate brownie and homemade honeycomb ice cream. I was so full I had to go for a walk when we went home. OH is asleep on the sofa.Ā

  • Just as well walls can’t talk @Busy-Lizzie … that lovely little pub was the setting for a couple of riotous New Year’s Eve celebrations with friends from a local football club back when I was around 18/19/20 ish 🤪🤐
Glad to see it’s still going strong and that you had a lovely meal. 😊

So glad they didn't wreck it @Dovefromabove! It has a gorgeous fireplace and is full of beams. Father Christmas was having lunch too. He had taken his red hood off. Maybe he was going to visit a school after lunch.

It’s always been a lovely pub …. It was one of the first to have its fireplace and beams exposed etc … pretty unusual back then … the owners were friends of my friend’s father who owned the farm just down the road. Ā We were a pretty well-behaved crowd …. never did anything we really shouldn’t … a mix of Young Farmers and trainee solicitors, entrepreneurs etc … respectable but we did have fun 🤩

    I've got a big butternut squash.Ā
Can I cut it into chunks and use it in a curry?
How long would it take to simmer?

Hosta I do the onions, curry spices in a little oil, sweat them. Cook the butternut squash for a good 10 minutes, boiling water, because they are so hard, before adding stock and I use a tin of coconut milk to the frying pan.

I've got some coconut milk, so that sounds like a plan.Ā

Yes you can @Hostafan1. This is the recipe I've done, BBC.

    Ingredients

    • 200gĀ brown basmati rice
    • 1 tbspĀ olive oil
    • 1Ā butternut squash,Ā diced
    • 1Ā red onion,Ā diced
    • 2 tbspĀ mild curry paste
    • 300mlĀ vegetable stock
    • 4Ā large tomatoes,Ā roughly chopped
    • 400gĀ can chickpeas,Ā rinsed and drained
    • 3 tbspĀ fat-free Greek yogurt
    • small handful coriander,Ā chopped

    Method

    • STEP 1

Cook the rice in boiling salted water, as per pack instructions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the butternut squash for 2-3 mins until lightly browned. Add the onion and the curry paste and fry for 3-4 mins more.

    • STEP 2

Pour over the stock, then cover and simmer for 15-20 mins, or until the squash is tender. Add the tomatoes and chickpeas, then gently cook for 3-4 mins, until the tomatoes slightly soften.

    • STEP 3

Take off the heat and stir through the yogurt and coriander. Serve with the rice and some wholemeal chapattis if you like.

I added this but it went on the next page so, edited,Ā You don't have to use chickpeas, but they add protein. You can stir in cream or coconut cream instead of yoghurt. You can use tinned tomatoes or even a squirt of tomato paste. Many recipes can be adapted to what you have in the cupboard.
