We need to look at how other countries do everything: health, rail, public transport, education, MPs' payment/expenses etc etc and learn from them all.
Pick out the best aspects of their systems and  work out a way of fitting it into our systems.

Totally agree, BUT for me the underlying issue is still that the Germans spend more on healthcare than we do.
I worked in the Dutch system for a year, fantastic quality [ better than the NHS at the time, imo. ], but I was paying 55% income tax, on a salary of about £35000.

    Exactly so.
Everyone wants everything better, but expect "somebody else" to pay for it.

Cornwall hospital is at a critical incident level now.
Now there a load of people coming down for a holiday again,  if they need an ambulance they won’t get one, 20+ ambulances waiting outside with patients in  them,   they’ve suspended all operations for the time being and asking if anyone can take in a patient to free up beds. Messages gone out to staff to work extra hours.

eWll, that was an unexpected 'adventure' .... the Lovely Luke's dad came to pick me up and take me back to the garage to collect George ... just as I got in the car he had a phone call re some car wheels he'd 'won' on Ebay for a classic car he's doing up ... the chap was going to deliver them but now he couldn't ... they were only a few miles away in this direction... if Luke's dad took me to collect George first he would then have to turn around and come back this way ... so I said why 'Now you're here why don't we go to Wicklewood, pick up the wheels and then you can take me back to the garage ... it would save him 30 miles, probably an hour and a half of time and be better for the planet. However as we set off I discovered that Luke's dad doesn't 'do' Satnavs and didn't really know where he was going, and the destination was on a largeish housing estate ... I whipped out my iphone and took him straight there , even with a detour because of a road closure ... he was very impressed ... and very grateful ... and I had a nice outing through lovely countryside in pleasant company. Now George is home and starts like a whippet slipped of a leash ... a very good morning  B)

Sorry to hear that, was it someone you had got to know. I do hope your OH is keeping comfortable and relaxed, and that you are getting enough sleep, even if it is at funny times of the day or night.

Neither of us "knew" her, but it's always sad.
Husband was on good form today which makes a huge difference.
I've been awake since 4, and up since 5.

I don't know people can't contribute a bit more to the NHS, like they do in France. Low income people are exempt. I've said it before here. Also why can't people pay a contribution towards meals in hospital?

We had breakfast, bacon rolls, yum, and coffee in the village hall. Bought lovely English bread with a proper doughy middle, purple sprouting broccoli, big open mushrooms, apples (3 different varieties) from a local orchard, (all those unavailable in Dordogne), also cheese straws for OH, Florentines for me, sausage rolls and a joint of boned rolled shoulder of lamb for lunch tomorrow as I've invited friends. I'll cook it long and slow with herbs, onion and garlic.

I've strolled around the garden, there are things to do but OH has kept it going pretty well. The cottage is lovely and clean too.

  • Hello everyone,

Sorry AWOL again. So, so busy this last week. I've read daily, speed read really, with no time to post.
But, at last, I'm on holiday, fabulous location, gorgeous weather and the villa is beautiful, although they have provided only two wine glasses, which I can cope with, but honestly, the cheapest glass ever with rough edges, I'll have to buy some tomorrow, can't have that.

So now, a week of downtime, some paperwork to do in the mornings, but time for exploring and finding nice places to eat. Charlie very keen to do the history tours of the Chateau and museums in Pau. We'll visit Lourdes as well, because one has too.
I'm going to order bulbs this week too, lots of, especially blue ones.

Deer in the garden here this evening, not in the least bit timid. Luckily no flowers to eat, I think they're after the shrubby leaves.

Lovely warm day, 23° I hope that keeps up.

Belated Happy Birthday to @Nanny Beach, hugs to all who need them, quite a few, glad to see you reunited with OH @Busy-Lizzie. Found some gorgeous cooking apples last week at a farmer's market btw, so pleased, made a fabulous Apple Crumble.

    Pics of our 'holiday home'.

    Good night all.
