Pumpkin Beth made me laugh, that would be a brilliant name!
Im excited for the new Austin as well, hoping for something red... ive decided if its something nice Ill grab it too. I fancy the mill on the floss for out the front to go with munstead wood when I revamp that patch, I like the two tone cupped shape unless anyone has had issues with that one?
@tack... gorgeous isn't it? despite its brief spectacular flowering.. late April/May, the foliage is good to look at for the rest of the year... the one near me in a front garden is all of 10 x 10 feet but it's been there donkey's years..
Delighted you're getting Pink Martini and PJ... I really should ask for commission.. lol..
The flowers would go together in a vase but the plants of mill on the floss and munstead wood have different growth habit. The mill on the floss wants to grow and not flower much and munstead wood will flower but not grow much.
edited: My mill on the floss is only 1 year old so limited experience.
I had Mill on the Floss for 3 years, always hoping it would get better, maybe it would but I'm not going to live forever.. .. otherwise, experience same as Newbie's... it grew tall and lanky with sparse blooms, although they were sweetly scented at times, pretty, small blooms with picotee edging... the foliage developed some rust .. I have photos ..
I cannot believe I've been watering in February... and in this case I've actually liquid fed it too.. this is a special rose, not everyone's cup of tea and of some antiquity.. but it's capable of a full flush in mid winter, hence the feeding, as it's so mild I'm trying to force it to flower earlier.. every one of these tips will have a flower, single dark red changing to pink in warm weather..
'Bengal Crimson'.. typical China rose habit, very twiggy with criss crossing branches... none of this needs pruning or opening out and should all be left on.. DNA sequencing puts it more with Tea roses, hence maybe tender further north.. capable of climbing and considerable size where happy.. ..here's hoping it'll be in bloom later this month..
I tried this morning to do the same as you @Marlorena, get pots prepared for my two new roses. Bought the bags of manure and J.E No. 3 - couldn't get any big blue matching pots. I still like the Moroccan Blue glazed ones because I think they go well with our pale Bath stone house walls, so wanted more of the same, only bigger. I'm looking for 50/60 cm h x 40/50 width for long term pots and they don't appear to be available. Still, I suppose it gives me a great opportunity for more GC visits with my friend (and coffee and cake)!
@Lizzie27 ..do you have a Dobbies near you Lizzie? I used to get lots of nice pots from them.. including this dark blue glazed one.. [I think the grass had a bad hair day, reminds me of Boris's barnet]..
I went out to start pruning my roses, but was distracted by these flowers on Lady of Shalott. I have made a start on Golden Showers as it needs a prune to keep it less vigorous. Hoping to get some more done before the light fades.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Our nearest Dobbies is about 30 miles away @Marlorena and I sometimes go there with a friend for a day out. Might just have to ring her and suggest it! Thanks for the heads-up.
My Mill on the Floss is a bit lacklustre as well…I thought it was just me but sounds like it’s the rose. We’ll see if this year it improves but doesn’t sound too likely 🙄 It was planted in 2020. I’m trying to recall if it even really flowered last year 😱
