I bought my Dee-Lish/Sweet Parfum de Provence as ‘Line Renaud’ as it is most frequently called in Europe. I often call my roses what I think of as the nicest/least silly name of those available so chose the American name Julia Child over Absolutely Fabulous. SPdP seems more appropriate for a French rose, Dee-Lish silly but memorable and Line Renaud forgettable, hmm, maybe we should have a vote!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Well my pet peeve are names like Frilly Knickers, Black Stockings, etc 🙄 I once read a description of a Lily as ‘a little flirt flashing her pink knickers at you’, I mean come on guys 😂
..such a nice looking rose too.. I have a Frilly Cuff which just passes muster, name wise but Frilly Knickers sounds rather ..'transvestic'?.. shall I say?.. They don't name them like they used to..
Nollie, I think 'Line Renaud' is an elderly female French singer, I don't mind that name thinking of it that way..
Julia Child was of course an American chef, I think virtually unknown over here, much like Mary Berry or Delia Smith. These days, if they called a rose after Delia, I fear it would be more like 'Let's Be 'Avin Yer!'.. My husband is a West Ham supporter, he couldn't possibly suffer it..
I do wish rose sellers would have better descriptions and more photos (videos would be great as well) of their roses. I like the colour of this Chocoholic rose, but not a lot of details in the description: novel flowers(?), scent is pleasant on a still warm day (meaning barely perceptible?). Is anyone growing this? https://jonestherose.co.uk/roses/560-chocoholic-kenmahogany.html
.. current state of play with some of my roses.. 'Mutabilis'.. 'Devoniensis'.. 'Pink Martini'.. 'Prince Jardinier'... root pruned.. ...lovely colours on 'The Anniversary Rose'.. [Dee-Lish, Line Renaud, Parfum de Provence etc. etc]
@pitter-patter ...not a rose I've heard of before, rich colours... I'm not quite seeing the chocolate orange but perhaps as it develops it might become more apparent..
Hope you've all had a good weekend🙂 It's been bright and sunny here although not amazingly warm.
Managed to get more of my garden cut down, planted snowdrops in the green and did some Spring bulb planning, found spaces where I can plant my potted daffs and tulips and marked spaces for some crocus.
Also did a bit of replanting, I noticed some of my elderly penstemons had died and some looked a bit manky so ripped up some stachys byzantina and added them to the gaps. Also moved some self seeded linaria around since they have started taking up space like they are intentional plants.
All my roses are in some level of growth now, Parkdirektor Riggers has put out two basals although one of them has a blunt end. I'm blaming pigeons because they seem like the sort😉
Just for fun, below is an area I've revamped for this year, adding two extra roses, bulbs, redistributed the ferns and added another alpine clem. Here Little Rambler, pink, Our Dreams, (small splash of) yellow, and The Portland rose, super-pink.
@purplerallim I brought the exact same rose from there about 3+ years ago! Mine really wants to climb and is quite badly behaved, hoping it does better for you.
I agree on silly names! I dislike that in Plants in general... I wince when asked the name of a pretty flower and have to say "Fancy pants" etc.... Im currently wrangling my rather lovely hellebore purchases home from my parents on trains... worth it though! Huge Brunello. Pic dosent do it justice.
Just been out and fed all my roses but forgot the Etoile du Holland outside the garden gate, so must do that one tomorrow. I can just see the top of it on the trellis from the kitchen window, looking good with reddish leaves. If it doesn't rain again soon, I'll water the feed in then manure mulch. I also fed the clematis at the same time. I was surprised to see that my large box of Vitax Rose Food which I'd kept in the hall as a dry space over the winter looked damp at the base.
