Not a climber, but my belle de jour rose has thrown a 6 foot cane in its first season. Is it worth considering a non-climbing rose that could be left unpruned?
@pitter-patter seedling from LEH?? never let her set seed as far as I remember... will give it some more time.. Probably till Feb if it survives till then..
@Victoria Sponge all in pots.. new place is rental as well, so do not want to plant them.. the ones that I din't want to keep went to ground..
My orders were;
DA- Harlow Carr, Sceptere'd Isle
Trevor white- Lily, Mia, Molinard
Peter Beales- Gruss an Teplitz, Stephanie d'Ursel, Celine Forestier
British Roses- Sweet Child o'mine
Most are not suitable for pots.. Experimental projects..
Not necessarily, from LEH... What I often do, is plant seeds or place cuttings in pots that already have other plants in and I forget about them. Very impressive collection of roses. I hope they do well for you. Harlow Carr should be very good in a pot, it’s got a pleasantly trailing habit and a beautiful scent.
Re Cooldoc's little offshoot there, if it's not a seedling, and this rose apparently is quite fertile, then I suggest it's from a piece of own root... Austins are often quick to send out their own roots and I think one has gone to the edge of the pot and thrown up a little shoot... the foliage is the same colour as new growth on LEH.. so in effect it's a sucker from LEH not the rootstock..
... if you rummage around just under the top of the compost you should be able to trace it back to the crown above the graft... you could carefully sever this shoot and grow on as an 'own root' LEH...
Some fantastic bouquets above for this time of year.
@cooldoc, like Marlorena I suspect that’s a little Lady Em shoot, my Gertrude Jekyll regularly sprouts basals hard up against the pot and the Lady herself did it once. I cut them out below soil level as it makes the shrub shape look lopsided.
@Victoria Sponge I have a Graham Thomas, currently in a pot but planning to grow it up a fence. It hasn’t thrown out any climbing canes yet but it was new the beginning of this year so can’t tell you much from experience. I’ve seen some great photos of it grown as a climber though. Again, not much to go on as fragrance can take time to develop, but pretty light so far. Duchesse de Auerstadt is also too new to report back on - it concentrated on putting out lusty climbing canes this year and only produced one bloom.
Golden Celebration had a strong, wonderfully citrussy scent right from the start. I’m sure you could train it as a short climber at least. I found it’s long, arching stems too floppy to keep it shrub-shaped but that flexibility might lend itself well to espaliering. @Omori grows it well up an obelisk. It’s actually my back-up in case GT goes pear-shaped 😊
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Thank you for the sympathy with my rose courier woes. Styles Roses have been great throughout and they too are admitting defeat with APC and have sent me a new package today using Parcelforce.
Are you going to try and grow an own root LEM @cooldoc ? I would be tempted even though I don't really want 2 of anything.
Thanks everyone for your opinion on the sucker (pretty sure its not a seedling).. Will try to clear out the compost and see if I can fine any off shoots.. Will post some pics if I find any.. I would have removed it long back if it was green in colour.. got confused since it had the same colour as LEH, plus you can see that the graft is not buried enough.. Guess will know for sure tomorrow...
@pitter-patter having a good scent is a must for me.. everything else is bonus.. hence the selections I made.. Artemis scent has been described as minimal by Tantau, but @Marlorena and many others find it has got a decent scent..
@Tack I have lots of cuttings shoved into their respective pots (as I was lazy to label 'em).. In regards to what I will do if they take is another issue which I am not bothered at present.. let me see the success rate with cuttings
Oh brilliant answers everyone thank you. Yes I absolutely would consider a shrub to train @pitter-patter. Thank you I will take a look at Belle de Jour.
Thanks @Nollie and @Omori. I remember reading on here that GC had long arching stems, that's why I dismissed it for a previous possible yellow space. That makes me think it could be suitable if tall enough.
Thanks @newbie77 for putting the good word in for GC. I don't think the blackspot would bother me that much if I could have the colour and scent.
I like an experimental project @cooldoc, it's always worth a shot! I might have an experimental project with the above...
