Thanks for the thought @Mr. Vine Eye - I've never managed to raise a single successful cutting yet. Was thinking of trying with inside house window sills.... (?!)
@Loxley I have a MAC new this year, despite being in well-improved clay soil and given tonnes of water regularly it too has atrocious mildew that has infected another climbing rose nearby. I have loads of space for it, but mildew looks vile and on climbing canes and laterals is right in your face ugly. @Omori and @Lizzie27 does the mildew tendency lessen with age? I know I should give it another couple of years, but if it is always present I am tempted just to get rid, which brings me to a question….
Anyone know a good white shade-tolerant climber that DOESN’T get mildew?!
@Fire and @dabolem I got The Prince from TCL but they no longer list it, it is still listed in a couple of eu nurseries but a lot of older Austins are becoming very scarce here and of course DA prohibit sale to the UK anyway.
The problem with Rozanne is more underground than overground, so far as I understand - it develops huge, deep roots that will out-compete roses for nutrients. Presumably it needs a lot of energy to keep on flowering as it does. It’s more pink than blue for me, even in morning sun only. I like good old Nepeta for blue/lavender tones with roses and a new shrubby salvia called ‘Oh so Blue’ is rather pretty, sorry, rubbish photo:
Mme. Antoine Mari:
Palais Biron, just the odd scattered bloom now:
Gertrude Jekyll, first bloom of a modest late flush:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie my MAC never had mildew, not even in its first year, and it is near a Lagerstroemia that got it this year.
I know of many people who have MAC and none of them ever had problems of mildew with MAC, some of those MAC are old, some new, but they all bloom repeatedly and are beautiful. They all say that MAC get to its full “maturity” not before its third year, so I think you should be patient and try to keep it for a little more time.
Thanks for the precious infos about Rozanne geranium, I will avoid it. i like Nepeta and Salvia, but I think both need full sun, so I’m searching some blue perennials that can grow in half-shade
Yesterday I saw that rose.it has The Prince available, only 1 plant. I am going to call them, not the first time some site says “available” and then it’s really not.
Interesting, @dabolem, I wonder if it could be environmental factors here with MAC - warm days, cool nights and often high humidity as it’s certainly not lack of space, air circulation or water at the roots. Unless I simply don’t like a rose I’m usually happy to give all of them three years to develop, but mildew is something I have discovered I’m extremely intolerant of! Yes I saw the potted Prince on roses.it, but I’m going to wait until Spring and see what they have as there are a couple of other roses I want that are currently out of stock. I do rather fancy training two Princes either side of my arched doorway 😊

@Nollie No mildew on my MAC either, but I did have mildew on Albertine the previous year. I watered it as per usual last year but this year I gave it extra water on top of the usual, and had no mildew problems. MAC and Albertine are growing on a large tall fence with honeysuckle, and trees behind, so I stick the hose at the roots and let the water soak in on a low flow. It may be your MAC needs more time to develop a deep root system to get enough water for it?
'The Anniversary Rose'.. needs repotting.. 'Golden Beauty'.. 'Frilly Cuff'.. not without scent.. 'Lady Mary Fitzwilliam'.. due to be planted out soon.. 'Mme Antoine Mari'.. this has got huge and I've removed large thick canes from the middle, hence only foliage there... it doesn't look it, but it's still 6 x 6 feet as I'm looking down on it from a window.. I might have to remove because getting a bit too much for me now after 8 years or so and I'm having to spoil the look of it..
Fuchsia 'Chiquita Maria'.. [Stubbs. U.S. 1987].. I rather like this one.. Fuchsia 'Enfante Prodigue' [Prodigy]... very useful with Old Roses as it's a 19th C.. variety.. 1887 Victor Lemoine, France.. the same man who bred most of our Lilacs we grow today..
@Nollie, I had to get rid of MAC after 3-4 years, purely because of it's growth habit, which I had thought I would be able to control but it grew faster and taller! I don't recall it ever had mildew on an east facing high wall/fence. I don't think I watered it much either. I loved the flowers but wrong rose in that spot. I should have known better.
Thanks for the info on Rozanne's root system - I hadn't appreciated that, might have to move one or two!
@Nollie I didn’t know you could use The Prince on an arch, I thought it was a shrub.
@Marlorena your roses are gorgeous, Golden Beauty has such a rich and warm colour! I tried to grow fuchsias here, but miserably failed. It seem they don’t like to live in my garden
@dabolem ..thank you.. I think Fuchsias like moist damp conditions, rather than hot and dry, mostly..
@Nollie ..you were wanting a large mildew free climber - white? as usual I cannot vouch for your climate but when I grew 'Alister Stella Gray' I never saw any mildew.. I didn't get any on Mme A Carriere either mind, and that was in Cornwall..
..here are some photos from June, late in flowering this year, but a good look at the foliage on this rose, a Noisette.. .. photos from Mannington... when I grew it I did not get many blooms first year but really took off with growth in late summer..

Roald Dahl has always looked great whenever I’ve seen one. Lightly scented that’s all.
