Roses seem to grip people quite like no other plant.
It's the thorns! Prickly buggers 😁
I had a go at doing some proper hardening today and planted up some pots of bulbs for spring. But it went disastrously wrong with one of them. Not sure how but it was completely waterlogged, not draining at all! Ended up having to scoop everything out and start again. Very sloppy work.
Had images of @c@celcius_kkw's spring pots from this year in my head! That's what the inspiration was.
Here's Arthur Bell at my plot. I'm only passing through my own garden at the moment on the way to the shed. But I know it's definitley a bit flatter than it was after all the heavy rain last week! Must give the roses some attention and make sure they're tied in. Will give some time to it next week.
@pandakoalagirl49lS9c8QR_ ..no more Austins for me right now, discount or not, but I'll see next March if there's anything new that captures my attention.. they will be discountiing then too I expect..
Finally I received my Phyllis Bide, Lady of Shallott and Lady Emma Hamilton. They are already planted by the sides of an arch.
Lady of Shallott has a beautiful bud, I didn’t expect it!
Now I have to decide which perennial(s) put near /between them. I seem to remember that @Marlorena advised some kind of Geranium, but not some other that was too invasive, but I can’t find the post.
What could I put there? I’d like some blue, I think it would be great between the peach and tangerin colour of those roses
(Sorry, the pic is not really on focus, there’s a lot of wind today)
@dabolem ..I'm happy you got your new roses.. I don't know which Geranium I mentioned, there are so many but 'Russell Prichard' which is a purple/pink and flowers from May - Oct.. still in flower now.. and 'Patricia' which is more purple and also flowers for a long time, are 2 that do well for me, and seem to enjoy sun such as we have it here.. For blue I have 'Eureka' and 'Orion' which are similar... both a bit floppy.. Also himalayense 'Gravetye' which is fabulous but a short bloom season..
With Lady of Shalott I have Ceratostigma willmottianum, the hardy Plumbago, which flowers for a long time.. taken a few moments ago..
Thank you @Marlorena! i will search for all the geraniums you mentioned here, I have many spots near the roses to fill, because as of now I mostly only thought about planting roses and there’s a lot of bare space in between.
Ceratostigma is a very good idea, yours is beautiful. Oh, and I think I will seatch for Brunnera Jack Frost, too, also mentioned in more than one post I’ve read here.
'Frilly Cuff'.. C. 'The Vagabond'.. 'Nathalie Nypels'.. really good late show from this rose.. 'Forever Royal'.. C. 'Piilu'.. Parahebe 'Avalanche'.. flowers for about 8 months on and off..
@Omori I noticed you have a Miscanthus behind your Hollyhock, which one do you grow please? I've had several in the past, not sure if I want another or not..
My Rosa 'Mm Alfred Carriere' has got a lot of tall arching shoots at the top of my fence (which I quite like) but these have powdery mildew and quite a few whitefly. Should I cut these stems out?
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
@Marlorena It’s ‘Kleine Silberspinne’. It’s quite a good one as it stays compact but makes a nice statement.
@Loxley I wouldn’t as it’s more an issue with cultivation, so removing that growth won’t fix the issue. Likely it needs a good deep drink. MAC is quite a monster rose so needs plenty of water, particularly while establishing.
